Winter in Downtown

Finally winter came in. I wanted to go into the Saint Petersburg downtown to look at my favorite places in snow.

I went through the small park to the Mikhail Palace (Russian Art Museum). The Palace and its fencing was in snow and I turned my mind to cast iron flowers. They were expressive.

I came to the Griboyedov Canal. My friend blogger Jason wrote a post about his visit to St. Petersburg, named "Venice of the North" and told about canals. I liked his post and photos.

Opposite the Cathedral of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is the entrance to the Mikhail Garden. Beautiful forged garden fencing was covered by snow too. If you carefully look at its design, you can see the tulips and roses.

There were the mosaic pictures of flowers and birds on the columns near the garden gate.

I decided to go into the garden and take a picture of the fencing and the Cathedral on background.
I had the post 'Autumn in Downtown' with the similar photos, which I took in fall.

Then fog has appeared. Temp dropped up -8 C (14 F), the walkers hurried to their warm homes. Here's a view of the Cathedral and the Griboyedov Canal in the fog.

I stood on the bridge over this canal, and paid attention at the bridge railing. It was very delicate, light, with a few flowers. Flowers looked like climbing roses with opening buds.

When I'd taken pictures on the river Moika, I loved beautiful bridge railing with golden flowers and leaves looked nice even in winter. Perhaps the poet Pushkin drove home here, his apartment had been not so far, now hidden in fog.

I looked at the other side. What a show! In a distance the huge Mikhail Castle disappeared in the fog. Castle’s dark red walls were vaguely visible.

The railing of the nearest bridge over the river Moika looked dark in fog.

I hope the weather will be sunny and clear the next time!

    1. Rosemary, this winter the river Moika was frozen very fast. Some years ago the winters were warmer, than this year. The rivers and canals (there are 64 of them) are not all frozen because of shipping on rivers.
      Thank you!

Your photo of fencing with Cathedral in backgroud is breathtaking. Lovely detail of curved wrought iron, tracery of tree branches with snow and the beautiful cathedral. 22. Nadezda girl hello there !
This is a fantastic post because I so enjoy seeing all the iron work on the gates and the bridge railings .. the snow makes me think of my favorite movie Dr. Zhivago, the old one .. St Petersburg has such atmosphere : )
My butterfly spent it's time in my fridge in it's cocoon .. that is the natural stage for it before it comes out of the cocoon in the Spring .. but I was never sure if the temperature was right .. now I know and I want to try again because it was such an amazing experience .. I would send you more information if you e-mail me .. glencross50@gmail.com

  23. What beautiful - in fact downright gorgeous - photos. The city is made for snow, I think, it enhances the fairytale atmosphere but I love the way you have caught particularly beautiful details. My favourite, perhaps, is the final picture, because the building in the distance seems almost to glow against the white.

  27. This looks like a beautiful and fascinating city. Very picturesque in the snow! I'm sure that you find snow easier to deal with than the people in the UK. I love the snow but everything grinds to a halt! I notice you speak Spanish, are you from Spain originally or can you speak a few languages?

    1. Anna, 'to deal with snow' is not easy! It can be very deep. Last winter we went to our summer cottage after big snowfall and had to walk in deep snow some meters, I arrived home tired. This winter we haven't a lot of snow, and the roads are clean. Yes, I can speak few languages. Thank you!
