I went through the small park to the Mikhail Palace (Russian Art Museum). The Palace and its fencing was in snow and I turned my mind to cast iron flowers. They were expressive.
I came to the Griboyedov Canal. My friend blogger Jason wrote a post about his visit to St. Petersburg, named "Venice of the North" and told about canals. I liked his post and photos.
Opposite the Cathedral of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is the entrance to the Mikhail Garden. Beautiful forged garden fencing was covered by snow too. If you carefully look at its design, you can see the tulips and roses.
There were the mosaic pictures of flowers and birds on the columns near the garden gate.
I decided to go into the garden and take a picture of the fencing and the Cathedral on background.
I had the post 'Autumn in Downtown' with the similar photos, which I took in fall.
Then fog has appeared. Temp dropped up -8 C (14 F), the walkers hurried to their warm homes. Here's a view of the Cathedral and the Griboyedov Canal in the fog.
I stood on the bridge over this canal, and paid attention at the bridge railing. It was very delicate, light, with a few flowers. Flowers looked like climbing roses with opening buds.
When I'd taken pictures on the river Moika, I loved beautiful bridge railing with golden flowers and leaves looked nice even in winter. Perhaps the poet Pushkin drove home here, his apartment had been not so far, now hidden in fog.
I looked at the other side. What a show! In a distance the huge Mikhail Castle disappeared in the fog. Castle’s dark red walls were vaguely visible.
The railing of the nearest bridge over the river Moika looked dark in fog.
I hope the weather will be sunny and clear the next time!
What fantastic pictures. The buildings are incredibly beautiful. The detail on the bridge railings is so impressive, and it all looks so lovely in the snow.
ReplyDeleteI loved that snow day, thank you, Tracey!
DeleteStunning pictures, Nadezda! I think that foggy weather gives nice atmosphere in your pictures.
ReplyDeleteSatu, when I went to take photos, the forecast showed sunny clear day. I'm glad you liked foggy pictures. Thank you!
DeleteWhat a beautiful place you live in! My husband was in "Leningrad", my mum too. They both say, it's so wonderful town. My imagine is working :-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings!
Ewa, you live very close to my place, on the same sea. It's enough short trip here, about 1 hour flight, but better in warm season. Thank you!
DeleteWhat beautiful architecture only enhanced by the snow. Such great pictures. All that snow is wonderful to look at if one does not have to be out in it. LOL!
ReplyDeleteOh, Lona, you're so right! To be out for hours in cold day is not good idea. But I had enough warm clothes.Thank you!
DeleteThose big impressive buildings look so light and delicate in the fog. The snow has decorated railings and buildings and walls so beautifully.
ReplyDeleteYes, when fog had come down over the Castle (the last photo) I was surprised. It's a huge building and there was something mysterious there. Thank you!
DeleteYou live in such a beautiful place! Thank you so much for these stunning pictures of Saint Petersburg. Your lovely images make me want to visit your gorgeous city!
ReplyDeleteMay your dream come true. Thank you!
DeleteOh, Nadezdo!
ReplyDeleteI am very happy to read a post about the most beautiful of cities.
I would like to see St. Petersburg.
Sea dream come true?
Beautiful winter photos.
I kiss you hard and greet
Lucia
Lucia, I'm sure all dreams come true, may should pass some time.I' glad you enjoy my photos. Thank you!
DeleteBeautiful photos Nadezda, the wrought iron fences are magnificent, topped here and there with snow. I love your shot looking down the River Moika.
ReplyDeleteRosemary, this winter the river Moika was frozen very fast. Some years ago the winters were warmer, than this year. The rivers and canals (there are 64 of them) are not all frozen because of shipping on rivers.
DeleteThank you!
Gorgeous!! My husband want to go to Russia....and i would love to see that hermitage..thanks i have never seen these types of pictures.....
ReplyDeleteSharon, thank you for stopping by! Here may be the warm weather too, especially in summer! ;))
DeleteHi Nadezda
ReplyDeleteWhat incredible photos! You have captured the beauty of the gates and brickwork and then the added dimension of the fog. Very well done. Everything looks so Christmas-y!
Astrid, it was cold and windy day with fog later. I appreciate you opinion very much!
DeleteDear Nadezda, These are some of the most beautiful photos I have seen! Picture number three is like a painting on a Christmas card. Your photo of fencing with Cathedral in backgroud is breathtaking. Lovely detail of curved wrought iron, tracery of tree branches with snow and the beautiful cathedral. Thank you so much for taking these photos in the cold and sharing them with us.
ReplyDeleteBetty, you could print some photos for Christmas cards of course. I give you my written consent.
DeleteThank you!
Thank you Nadezda. That is kind of you.

ReplyDeleteThe photos reminded me of the old part of Oslo, where I used to live (I am Norwegian, but live in London), but in Oslo we don't have the famous onion domes of Saint Petersburg of course!
Helene, I've been to Oslo in Spring. I loved it, was my dream to visit Norway. Thank you, I'm glad you love my pictures!

DeleteNadezda girl hello there !
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic post because I so enjoy seeing all the iron work on the gates and the bridge railings .. the snow makes me think of my favorite movie Dr. Zhivago, the old one .. St Petersburg has such atmosphere : )
My butterfly spent it's time in my fridge in it's cocoon .. that is the natural stage for it before it comes out of the cocoon in the Spring .. but I was never sure if the temperature was right .. now I know and I want to try again because it was such an amazing experience .. I would send you more information if you e-mail me .. glencross50@gmail.com
Joy : )
Joy, I love the book 'Dr. Jivago' by Pasternak. I will write you on e-mail. Thank you!
DeleteWhat beautiful - in fact downright gorgeous - photos. The city is made for snow, I think, it enhances the fairytale atmosphere but I love the way you have caught particularly beautiful details. My favourite, perhaps, is the final picture, because the building in the distance seems almost to glow against the white.
ReplyDeleteJenny, the last one was taken as a surprise, the cold and fog were coming up fast and I hurried to take pictures. I'm glad you liked them Thank you!
DeleteThank you Nadezda for allowing me to print your photos. You are very kind. I will try them on my printer, maybe use next Christmas.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Betty!
DeleteI love your new look blog Nadezda, and these images are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen, glad you liked the blog new design!

DeleteGracias y Feliz Navidad!
This looks like a beautiful and fascinating city. Very picturesque in the snow! I'm sure that you find snow easier to deal with than the people in the UK. I love the snow but everything grinds to a halt! I notice you speak Spanish, are you from Spain originally or can you speak a few languages?
ReplyDeleteAnna, 'to deal with snow' is not easy! It can be very deep. Last winter we went to our summer cottage after big snowfall and had to walk in deep snow some meters, I arrived home tired. This winter we haven't a lot of snow, and the roads are clean. Yes, I can speak few languages. Thank you!
DeleteWhat an amazing castle! Thank you for sharing your photos... just amazing! We are just beginning to get some snow! We have not had very much at all this year... my kids are ready for it! Merry Christmas!
ReplyDelete~Julie
Julie, I hope you had white Christmas and your lovely kids played with snowman! Thank you!
DeleteSo hauntingly beautiful! I've never seen such amazing photos of St. Petersburg. Wow! Thanks so much for sharing--I feel like I want to go back and look at the lovely images again and again!
ReplyDeleteI agree, my city is nice in Fall and in Winter, despite the snow and cold weather. Thank you!
DeleteSo beautiful, Nadezda!
ReplyDeleteI agree Sandi.
