Saint Petersburg at Night, December 2019

Today I want to invite you for a walk along the Neva River embankment in St. Petersburg. Winter is here, the temperature is 0 C + 1C. There is no snow, but days are short and darkness begins at 6 p.m. All buildings in the downtown are lit.
The first thing I want to show is the building of the State Mining University. It was built in the 18th century.  Many engineers graduated University since that time.
The building's facade and the main entrance is decorated with 12 columns, and a coat of arms of a two-headed eagle is located above them.

The sculpture of two struggling men is located near the main entrance. Here is the hero of Hercules and the giant Antaeus, who kept earthly treasures.

We go further along the river and see the domes of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. In 19th century the monastery church in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin was founded in the pseudo-Russian style.

I showed you this church in my previous post, this is a view inside:

In the 1920s, all values of the church were removed by the authorities, and the rest of the monks were arrested. The priceless wall paintings were simply painted over. Restoration work began in 1990, which is still going on.

Let's look at the Neva river. The Palace bridge and the Winter palace (Hermitage) is seen in a distance. It was snowing last night, the embankment of  the Neva river got white.
Our walk is over. To be continued...

  1. You live in a wonderful, historic city, Nadezda with art, culture and history aplenty, to say nothing of tragedy. It has been very interesting to take this walk with you and I look forward to the next segment.

  2. Thank you Nadezda for this walk in your town. St Petersburg is such a beautiful city with great architecture. It is a big city too and when we were there I enjoyed watching it from inside a vehicle! I’d love to go back, even though we stayed there a week that was too little time to see it well and the second time we did not stay long either. I look forward to seeing more of your walks and your city - so interesting.

    1. I remember Vagabonde the day we met and had lunch together. It was a beautiful place on the Griboedov Canal. I agree - my city is huge, and it takes more time to see the most.

  15. Thank you for this post. I visited St Petersburg this past May, and was trying to identify one of the buildings in my photo. Turns out it was the St Petersburg Mining University. Google brought me to this post when I searched for building with columns and giant eagle in front.
