Book review: L.
Uleysky "Vertical gardening"
The author Lidia Uleysky tried to sort through all the variety
of creepers and gives an idea of the most common of them. Indeed,
creepers are indispensable in vertical gardening; they help to
increase green areas especially in small gardens.
The
author advises to start with ordinary bindweed, decorative beans or
parthenocissus. She talks that people in South Russia often decorated verandas, high walls of houses with colored clematis, beautiful
wisteria, climbing roses, or Amur grape. Having become acquainted
with a variety and features of climbing plants I could explore my
vertical garden.
When
I read this book I've remembered Amur grape. It is a powerful climber
up to 20 m tall, with round, dark green leaves. Also
I grow Curly Perfoliate honeysuckle in my garden, it might to hang
upside down and to decorate the walls of my house.
The author tells about wooden and iron devices that help to grow up the Liana, they are grids, pyramids, romantic arches, trellises, and they all may be the garden decor as well.
I have arches and trellises in my garden, they divide garden into individual plots. So I could isolate a cozy area near my pond and decorate the boxes with compost.
The book talks about caring for climbing plants, tools to control their pests and methods of favorite plants reproduction, about watering and fertilizing Liana in containers and in the ground.
I
think this book will be helpful to many gardeners.
I

Barb, I'm glad you liked my paintings, Thank you!
DeleteI love creepers but unfortunately, I don't have any room for them in my tiny garden. So, when spring comes, looking forward to seeing the arches and trellises in your garden:)
ReplyDeleteKeity, I love creepers because they need small room on the ground and mostly grow up. I'm planning to plant new honeysuckle next spring near my arch. Thank you!
DeleteHappy Birthday! What a nice gift to get, you'll have fun looking at the vines and climbers you could put in your garden.
ReplyDeleteLaurrie, I will study all this book till spring comes, thank you!
DeleteHappy belated birthday, Nadezda.
ReplyDeleteI have creepers on my walls, but also roses and clematis and honeysuckle. Some of them take over.
The worst creeper I know is called ‘Russian vine’ here. It just grows and grows and if you have a place which needs covering quickly, use Russian vine. I don’t know why ‘Russian’ vine, I expect it is called something else in Russia.
Frico, the ‘Russian vine’ grows well only in the southern regions of Russia. In my climate, it freezes up to the level of snow. It is called here Highlander (Polygonum)
DeleteI planted it three years ago,but it was cold in the winter and I have not found Highlander in spring,
Gardeners say that when planting ‘Russian vine’,it's recommended to enclose a strong barrier, dug in a certain depth in the ground.
Thank you!
Nadezda! Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThe book is interesting. It will be happy for you.

DeleteWe don’t have a garden here really, we have “woods” – many pine trees and mostly shade. We grow flowers in herbs in planters in spring and summer. Happy belated birthday – I hope you have a nice day. The flowers you received are beautiful. Thanks for commenting on my blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vagabonde!
DeleteHi Nadezda – I read your comment on my blog. Yes, we went to St. Petersburg for a week in 2005. That was before I had a digital camera. I took pictures with my old film camera and they are not very good. It is on my list of posts to write about, but I don’t know when I will write it – but I will eventually. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vagabonde!
