GBBD in August 2013

The time goes so quickly, we're in August, Garden Bloggers Bloom Day is today. What blooms in my northern garden in mid-August ?
Of course, clematises bloom despite of the cold snap, particularly cold nights and early mornings. There are Clematis varieties ‘The President’ and ‘Madam de Coultre’.

In spring I planted the Impatiens (Balsamina) seeds directly into the flower bed and they had survived, had plenty of space are blooming now.

Phlox started flowering in early August and is still blooming in white and purple inflorescence.

In May I potted a few Begonia tubers. They had been growing in the greenhouse until the weather became warm, then I've put the pots in the garden and in the hanging basket. The varieties are: white 'Non stop','Illumination Rose’ pendula,  red 'Non Stop Fire' and Rose Petticoat'.

Beautiful Hydrangea Grandiflora grows 8 years in my garden and flowers permanently. I planted a few cuttings from it and now I have more new Grandiflora.

Roses bloom the second wave. The red-silvery rose ‘Anadia’ has recovered and is blooming well. Another one is pink rose ‘The Fairy’, it never rests, blooms continuously from June to frost.

Sweet peas were planted in a large container near the pergola; their fragrance is spread in my window now. In the front garden Ligularia (dentata), variety ‘Othello’ is blooming too. Bees, butterflies and bumblebees love its yellow flowers.

Most of my lilies have faded but these two are still in bloom, have strong flavor!
I hope to show you some flowering plants despite of cold weather and rain the next GBBD in September.

    1. The white clematis is 'Madam de Coultre' and it grew very high but didn't bloom last year. It had one bud that was frozen. This August it started normally blooming. Thank you, Tracey!

  4. I am always surprised that in the far north so many flowers are doing excellent. Your Hydrangea is gorgeous and I also like te Begonias very much. Anyway you have the same variety of plants we have, but may be your summer is a bit shorter because your nights are more cold.
Enjoy your beautiful garden and have a nice weekend!

    1. You're right, Janneke. We have similar plants in our gardens, possibly I choose more hardy varieties to plant here. The nights become colder, but diurnal temps are enough warm +20...+22 C. Thank you!

  7. Your flowers are all beautiful and I especially like your begonias! You have such a beautiful garden and it's always sad when August reminds us that summer will be over in just a couple of months.

    1. Peter, August reminds us that here summer will be over in 3-4 weeks :((
I love begonias and always worry about storing them in winter, because they need special temps. But they flower pretty.
      Thank you!

  8. Lovely August flowers and great pictures! I have been looking at The President online a couple of times, as I wanted to buy a blue clematis, eventually I went for a different one, a more blue one, but yours is gorgeous, wish I could have both! Roses and lilies have a special place in my heart, loved your Fairy, beautiful flowers. Happy GBBD!

  10. Its a real treat looking at the flowers in your garden. Your Hydrangea is different from the one that can flourish in the tropics. Yours is truly spectacular.

  11. Your Clematis and Phlox, roses and lilies - all beautiful!

  12. So many lovely blooms this August! Hydrangeas are one of my favorites, and yours are lovely. Your impatiens looks so different from what we see here, I had to look it up. Very interesting; our impatiens are shorter and more mounding. Happy Bloom Day, and thanks for stopping by my Bloom Day post!

    1. Rose, the short impatiens is variety 'Impatiens walleriana' and is very popular here too. But it's less hardy and mostly grows as indoor plant. Mine is variety 'Impatiens balsamina' and undemanding.
      Thank you!

  16. I am quite surprised how many plants our gardens share. My hydrangeas do not do as well as yours, they are fairly recent additions, so I hope that they will grow better next year.

    1. I learned hydrangea blooms depend of the winter. If the winter was cold and wet hydrangea blooms a little. The last winter here was cold and dry, without rains, my new young hydrangea (from cutting) had buds in July and still is in bloom.
      Thank you, Friko!

  19. Lovely flowers. I used ti grow balsam from seed but haven't seen any seed for a while. I have also just bought ten phlox which are potted up to grow on a bit and I'm pleased to hear that they flower for a long time.

As for ligularia - I have Desdemona which is a lovely plant but unfortunately the slug devastate it

    1. Sue, I have my own seeds of Balsam, I collect them every fall. I'm sure you will happy with your phlox! I'd like to grow Desdemona ligularia, but have not seen it in a nursery.

  20. Your garden has many flowers on this August GBBD. I was particularly taken with the red begonia 'Non Stop Fire'. Begonias do well in my garden and I think this is a really pretty one I might look for.

    1. I love begonias as well, especially that they grow and flower with minimum care. The problem I have is storing in winter. So I always try to keep them well.
      Thank you, Jennifer!
