One Day of a Year

Yesterday was frosty day, -15 C some time with the sun and no wind, It was my special day. Because once you realize that one year more has flown. They say that you feel as old as your soul feels old. Well, yesterday was my birthday and I can particularly not worry: my soul is still young
After wonderful breakfast it was time for gifts. One gift was a new orchid and lily, they're beautiful, aren't they?

The another one was a book or to more accurately say it's a pocket guide 'The Pocket Flower Expert' by D.G. Hessayon, an English writer (translation into Russian).
Here it is:

Although we all use Internet very much, sometimes we need a pocket book for plant identification in a nursery, Botanic gardens or in a market. I love its detailed paintings, photos and information about methods of flower growing, of diseases, care, potting and planting shown in this guide.

Before afternoon I had prepared cups for tea and coffee, blackcurrant jam, chocolate cookies, milk, teapot, etc. for birthday party and went with my friend to see the new exhibition in Hermitage museum. At the evening I took a seat at the table in the dining room, and had a great time eating a piece of 'sancho' cake, drank a glass of Chateau clinking: 'на здоровье!', enjoying my family and friends around me.

What do you think about pocket guide? You do still read books or use the internet only? Thank you!

  1. Happy birthday to you. Wish you all the best! I still use pocket books to know about the identity of the plants that we want. Lovely gift! The color is so fantastic! Congratulation...

    1. The same is here, Sue, many books by Dr Hessayon are sold, this one is to complete my collection. There is a garden center quite far and wi-hi is not good there so this book will be useful in that place.

  4. Happy birthday dear Nadezda, I hope you had a wonderful day!
Your red orchid is gorgeous and so is the lily, plants are always the best gifts, right? I no longer use my many gardening reference books, I prefer to use the Internet, it is much quicker and I often take my iPad mini with me outside in the garden if I am working on something where I need continuous access online. I have bought a good but cheap Wi-Fi Range Extender (booster) and that enables me to have Internet connection in the garden too – very practical. I have even worked out how to avoid getting muddy stains on my iPad – I take a pair of disposable gloves with me out, and put the gloves ON when I use the iPad, and take them off again when I go back to work in the garden. Yep, very practical :-)

The lily fragrance is strong and the buds open every day!

  9. Nadezda, I see we are both January babies :) Many Happy Returns. You had a lovely day didn't you. Thoughtful gardening gifts are the ones I cherish most. I am not a big reader and much prefer to get all my info on the internet nowadays. I have a few garden books but tend not to pick them up much.
Hope you are having a great weekend :)

  10. Nadezda, Congratulations with your birthday. That pocket guide of plants will be very useful. We can find everything on the internet but it´s so much nice to have a real paper book in our hands. I love just reading and after reading they are on the shelves and I can look at them and remember.

  18. Happy birthday Nadezda - your birthday was two days before mine! Sounds like you had a wonderful day. I did too, since it's summer here my guests and I sat outside (in the shade) and had cake and afternoon tea. I was just looking at your post about your summer cottage garden and all the snow that's currently covering it. Such beautiful scenes! I bet the birds were happy with their new feeder.

    1. The weather here is very changeable, Ruth. Yesterday I shoveled the path and today snow melts again. Forecast says frost -15C the next week. Don't know how the plant survive this winter.
      Thank you!
