Greenery and Birdsong on the Celio Hill

Peaceful, safe and beautiful park is an oasis of greenery and birdsong in noisy Rome, it's a good place to relax. The Celio hill or Caelian Hill situated up above the Colosseum is one of the famous seven hills of Rome, Italy. I could reach the Celio hill on foot from the Colosseum metro station. It's not as high as the Palatine hill   The entrance was free. It's a public garden now.

I've before read that in 1553 the Mattei family purchased the land and subsequently created the beautiful garden. Near the entrance gate there is a stand saying that some years ago the original flowerbed designs were recreated as well as improved upon modern irrigation system, playground area, fountains, a fishpond to fascinate children, information signs and benches.

The 'Parco del Celio' became more grassy and shadier. I strolled by paths up and down the hill and saw interesting drinking water fountains, here is my collection:

Much of Rome's history seems to have passed by this garden, in that part of the Celio hill the massive Temple of Claudius was, huge building blocks from the temple dominate over the garden.

High in the pines I've seen a nest. Suddenly the bird flew off and to my surprise it was a parrot! Green parrot was very busy looking for something on the ground.

As other visitors I had a few restful hours enjoying autumn sun and listening to parrot songs.

  3. What a beautiful area and I love those water features .. I am glad entrance is free and opened to the public like that .. people need those green spaces to decompress from busy noisy lives in such a large city.
My garden PA was there on training (military) years ago for 6 months .. he got to know the city well but I think he probably missed this wonderful place.

    1. It's not surprisingly that some people visiting Rome do not know about Celio garden. It's not tourist attraction, I think this garden is for citizens of the municipality..

    1. Oh, Molly, these ancient stones are everywhere in this garden. They're the stones of ancient Rome.

  13. Another great post from Rome, Nadezda! And jet I think that Rome was't very green in general. Some nice parks but streets and squares were quite bare. Very few flowers around. Even though, it was beautiful!

    1. You're right Tistou, it was, even so! I think that the gardens and parks are mostly around the center and are called 'villas', very green and old parks.

  17. Such a beautiful and peaceful place in Rome Nadezda, I love those pictures of the drinking water fountains, I remember I made many years ago also a special collection of fountain pictures in Rome. And about the green parrots: nowadays we have them even in our country, winters are not that cold anymore and the parrots seem to become hardier.

  18. What a beautiful place! I have been to Rome twice, but only for short stays each time, and I've never seen this part of the city. I think of Rome as a busy, bustling city so rich in history. Thank you for showing us there are such lovely peaceful green spaces in the city, too.
