Wordless Monday: Annual Dahlia and Aster

I've grown these aster and dahlia from seed, started in early spring on my windowsills.
Do you love growing annuals by your own or do you prefer to buy seedlings for your garden?

    1. Oh, these bad aphids, Ela. I saved my asters spaying several times when I'd seen aphids.

  5. These are stunning. If I had them in my garden, I might have to stay outside most of the day just admiring their beauty. I planted Dahlia bulbs for the first time this year and enjoyed them immensely Now, I need to remember to dig them up before the frost. I have grown annuals from seeds but they usually get leggy on my porch and don't do too well once I transplant them. If I use lights, they come out better. Beautiful times in your garden. :-)

    1. It's a problem with annuals growing from seed, Judy. I used to light them with special lamps. But this year seedlings grew well, and bloom healthy now.
I forgot to dig up dahlia tubers before frost some years ago and lost very pretty flowers, it was pity.

  8. I never buy seedlings, love to sow my own annuals in spring but I cannot sow anymore annuals because my garden has grown full with perennials. I have been sowing asters in the past, dahlias I have from tubers which I store in winter.
Beautiful colours Nadezda, love them all.
Wish you a lovely rest of the week!

  10. Nadezda, I was happy with the results of my Dahlias purchased as plug plants, wow look at what you have done from seed. I used to grow annuals from seed, just buy plug plants these days.

    1. It's a good idea Alistair to have some plants as plug ones, because there are often some empty spots in a garden. Thank you!

  11. Beautiful dahlias and asters! I didn't know that pompon type dahlias can be obdained from seed, only the single flowered types. Interesting!
I love some specific cultivars of perennial dahlias and I overwinter them in cellar. I hope to find some more special cultivars for future!

    1. I know, Tistou, you have lovely collection of dahlias. My pompon dahlia was a surprise to me, because I had had one only packet of seed and all plants are different. I'll try to store its tubers and see what I will have next year.

  14. Oh Nadezda, what gorgeous beauties you have in your garden! W o n d e r f u l photos.
I grow both annuals and perennials from seed, but for example the spring/summer 2015 were so cold and rainy that the results were not very good. Interestingly, the hard frost in January 2016 killed for example the lavenders bought as seedlings but not those sown by me.
    Have a beautiful weekend!

    1. You have grown lavender from seed, wow! I am wanting to have lavender in my garden as well but looking at it in garden center always think: no, it will die in winter. That is a reason to sow lavender by my own, thank you for idea, Sara!

    2. It was an interesting result. The plants were protected in the same way and the bigger plants (those that died) were planted in the final, better position. The seeds I used were of Lavandula angustifolia by Impecta ordered from the Finnish store Exotic Garden.
Soon we will see how the next winter will be... :)
