Despite the protracted and cool spring nature feels the approach of summer. My evergreen rhododendrons started flowering. As usual rhododendron 'Pohjolan Daughter'('Northern Daughter') was the first to blossom. It's Finnish bred of rhododendrons, very hardy, noteworthy that its buds are deep pink and opened flowers are light lilac.
Deciduous azaleas have not yet unfolded buds. They always begin to bloom a little later than evergreen rhododendrons. Moreover, first flowers appear and then just leaves. Now you see 'Mandarin light', the red buds and leafless branches.
By the way the dark red azalea buds transform in orange-yellow flowers.
Here are my two latest purchases started to blossom. One is 'Nova Zembla' rhododendron, it blooms in full. The flowers are medium and in deep color, the bush is low and wide.
The second one is the evergreen variety 'Roseum Elegance', is too little and has deep pink buds.
Do you grow any rhododendrons? Are they easy of growth or do they need permanent care? Or maybe you just love looking at them in parks?
We have a couple of rhododendrons that are going over now. They tend to look after themselves.

DeleteYour rhododendrons are beautiful, dear Nadezda! The rhododendron is the state flower of Washington and there are some that are native to the western side of the state. They love the acidic soil and mild winters here and it's a very popular plant in this area due to it's ease of growth. I have several myself and love them. It looks like spring is definitely making itself known in your garden.
ReplyDeleteOh, Peter I have not known about the state flower, so lovely! The soil in my garden is acidic too but winters are not mild :-). Therefore I planted very hardy Finnish bred rhododendrons. Spring is here, you're right, it a treat to see their blossom.

DeleteI only grow one, no two! One in a pot, I think of pruning back after flowering and one in the soil. The one in the soil is the most common variety. My soil is not suited for rododendrons. But I love yours! Groetjes Hetty
ReplyDeleteOh, yes Hetty rhododendrons need acidic soil and it's difficult to made this soil especially for them. Hopefully yours grows well in a pot.

ReplyDeleteOur woodland soil would be rather good for the rhododendrons, but unfortunately the cold winters limit the choice. I would love to have a 'Pohjolan tytär'! :) I have 'Helsinki University', 'Pekka' and 'Haaga'. They should all survive about -37 C. No blooms here yet, but there's some pink colour in the buds by now. :)

Your rhododendrons have beautiful color and they look very healthy. I think they grow well in Georgia and also in Tennessee. I did not buy annuals to place in planters this year because Jim’s illness is progressing and he would not know how to plant them. My knees are also so bad now that I have to use 2 canes, so cannot do much. It pains me to watch the weeds grow in our yard and I can’t do much about it. I’ll have one knee operation this summer so I hope it will help. The yard in Nashville is very small and now just has grass. I’ll like to plant flowers in it in the future but I am not that good at it. Maybe you can come for a visit in a year or so, stay with us and advise me on what to plant?

These rhododendrons bloom wonderfully! We are lucky that Finnish have bred hardy evergreen rhododendrons for our climate! However, this is still undiscovered land for me as I have zero rhododendrons in my garden! :)
