The Garden on a Slope

Looking at any garden located on a slope I'm always amazed. I can imagine hard work to create that garden. What the creative gardeners and what the compositions of plants, boulders, flowers, water objects, waterfalls, sculptures, stones, paths!
Today I want to show you the magnificent garden on the slope, located in the dry moat around the Windsor Castle (UK). I believe this is one of masterpieces in landscape design.

When you look at such garden you begin to carefully consider the details higher and higher and notice ladders, fountains, paths and beautiful compositions of flowers and shrubs.

It turned out when I came to visit the Windsor castle, I was stuck on the fortress wall for a long time looking with amazement at the garden stretched in the dry moat. This gorgeous garden one may see only from the opposite wall of the Windsor castle's dry moat. It's pity I couldn't go down and look closely at plants and flowers.

I'd taken my another camera to make closer pictures of all the interesting places in the garden. So I'd been able to see and show you pines on the wall, small waterfalls and ponds with water plants, fountains and pergolas, hostas, roses, callas, topiary, lianas...

Have you been to or known this landscape? Do you think the nature helps the gardener to create
a garden on a slope?

  2. Nadezda, that garden is GORGEOUS! Those orange roses look glorious! I've always been totally hooked on english gardens, they are my idea of what a garden should look like: perfection! Unfortunately my climate is anything but british... Thanks for sharing these beautiful, tantalizing pictures!

    1. Dear MDN, I can say the same: my climate isn't British, so I love English garden and try to take some details to my Northern garden.

  3. It’s beautiful we must visit one day. I have seen dry moats made into gardens elsewhere but they tended to just garden the flat space at the bottom.

  9. Many, many years ago I have seen some British gardens, but not this one. It looks very British and romantic with the castle in the background. My Dad's garden had a slope. It was always difficult to maintain. I wish I would have at least a little slope in my garden. It would make the garden more interesting.

  13. British gardens are beautifully laid out and well maintained. This is one of the loveliest I have seen (from your photos).
What a pity you were not permitted to walk into the garden and see plants closer.
I like the soft colours and all the different shapes and shades of green.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful photos.

  16. I think that a garden in a slope offers gardeners a great opportunity. I went in a garden the other day which had a very steep slope on one side. It was only a small garden but the owner had planted it so well that it seemed as if we were in a huge jungle, with towering plants. Actually, they were small plants on the steep slope. What made it even more difficult is that it was quite shady. She had used a lot of fuschias and hydrangeas. Fascinating. As it was a private garden I didn't think it was polite to ask to take photos.

  18. It's just a shame the public couldn't go down into the gardens. When I see large gardens like that, I envy the garden help they have.
