This Summer Dahlias

My dahlias began to bloom from the end of August and continue blooming so far. I was waiting for their flowers in mid-August but they bloomed later. Truly to say every autumn I think: 'I won't store Dahlias tubers anymore in the city apartment, as they get dried and die during storing'....
But when I see new Dahlia leaves I forget my doubts. So let's see their blooming this summer.

There are annual dahlias that are easy in growth. One can grow them from seed or buy seedlings in a garden center. This spring I did buy the seedlings because there were no space on the windowsills for more sowing :-) They were not expensive and it was mix of annual dahlias. Here they are:

Now in September, when many other flowers have disappeared, and the roses have almost finished their flowering, the dahlias adorn the garden, adding bright colors. I hope that they will blossom when the first frost or low temperature comes.
Perhaps I would decide to keep Dahlia tubers. Or not? "To be or not to be is a question," as Shakespeare said. :-)

  3. Nadezda, these Dahlias are gorgeous! I planted a purple Dahlia some months ago and it has sprouted, I never planted Dahlias before. They are common garden plants here, the bulbs don't to be dug up here since winters are never cold enough to freeze the soil. Wish you a great weekend! Marcelo

    1. That's a really good thing Manolo, to grow dahlias without digging them out and storing 7 months!
So you can grow a lot of them, different shapes and colors.

    1. Ваши георгины мне тоже нравятся - такие яркие, сразу бросаются в глаза. Но даже у вас в погребе сохраняются не все, а у меня погреба нет. Хранить их сложно.

    1. Oh, Janneke you understand me. The storing of dahlias tubers and moreover gladioli and begonia tubers makes me think to finish with storage in city apartment. Of course dahlias are pretty flowers.

  8. I love your Dahlias Nadezda. I find Dahlias less easy to over Winter than Begonias and as you say plug plants are inexpensive.

  11. I was so surprised, that dahlias didn't like the bright and hot sammer we had this year. All blooms burned in sun during the drought. Now that it has been raining a little, they start to flower properly again. Yours are lovely and I hope you keep them! ;)

    1. Tistou, I waited for their flowers as well and only at the end of August dahlias started to bloom. Yes, this summer was unusual for our climate, many plants suffered without watering. You dahlias 'Cafe au Lait are pretty!

  22. I have not grown dahlias very much but the second picture has really surprised me. It is quite different from most dahlias. They certainly make a lovely splash of colour late in the summer season.
I didn't know seedlings can be planted. I have only known about tubers. Do you have enough space to store them?
Thanks for your lovely photos. A nice variety in the group.

    1. Betty, I have no much space for storing. Tubers need temp about +12...15 C, that's the problem. So I perhaps will buy seeds or seedling of annuals dahlias.
      Glad you liked my photos!

  23. Hello Nadezda and what gorgeous dahlias you have here ! They always remind me of my great aunt who grew dinner plate ? dahlias and they were spectacular ! I have no luck with them .. the bugs just have an intense feast .. it is too disheartening to see them end up as flower rags. I do appreciate seeing other gardener's bounty with them though.

    1. Sorry to hear about your dahlias, Joy. Mine are healthy but coming cold temps may kill them at all. Let them bloom until the weather allows:-)
