Pushkinia and Scilla
I want to tell you about small flowers grown in my garden, you might want to plant their bulbs and admire these babies in spring and early summer. They are Pushkinia (Puschkinia) and Scylla (Scilla), low perennial bulbous plants that bloom in early spring.
Scylla is a wonderful plant, for me is difficult to imagine a spring garden without it. Bright blue spots of Scylla look as fragments of the spring sky. The bluish, purple, white, pink flowers can be seen in a flowerbed or among shrubs in my garden.
After flowering, Scylla forms fruit with a small amount of black seeds. I do not advise you to collect them because the big bulbs also grow the small ones for reproduction.
My other favorite bulbous spring plant is Pushkinia, a lovely little plant with pale blue striped or almost white flowers. Flowers have a strong smell and attract a lot of bees and spring butterflies.
Several years ago I planted Pushkinia and Scylla in a shady place, but they grow well in sunlit beds. They are cold-resistant, I do not cover them for wintering.
In a small garden you can arrange the early spring flowers among perennials. The blue and white colors of Scylla and Pushkinia will greatly adorn the mixborder, rocky garden, alpine hills, they are charming in the spring next to the stones. These small plants have a high decorative effect.
Do you love these bulbous plants? Where do you plant them?
Me encantan Nadezda, son preciosas. Yo tengo siempre bulbosas en el jardín. Feliz día y un fuerte abrazo.
ReplyDeleteA mi tambien, Lola.
DeleteAbrazos!
Oh, they are so beautiful! I like especially the Scillas, but I don't have them at the moment. Many bulbous plants have died in previous winters, perhaps because of the hard frost and no snow. Perhaps in the future... :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Women's Day!
Sure Sara you could grow them, these little beauties are first in spring.
DeleteHappy belated Women's day to you too!
These images remind me that spring is not far behind and that soon we will start to have colour in our gardens. I can hardly wait!
ReplyDeleteI do long for spring, David. Have plans to start new plants.
DeleteThey are really pretty flowers, We have some in the garden but haven't seem them so far so I hope that they haven't disappeared.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you'll see them later Sue. I often 'move' pushkinia and scilla digging in the bed.
DeleteHi Nadezda! They are so beautiful flowers. They also spread very hard in the garden. Have a nice weekend

Spring is a little late here, Maria. But it comes!
DeleteHugs!
Bom dia, lindas flores que embelezam os jardins, sem elas os mesmos eram tristes.

Es asi, Antonio, tienes razon!
DeleteThis is a good way to bring the bright blue spring sky right down to earth. They are such sweet little flowers. So cheerful. I have had some of these in my garden but they disappeared. I don't know if I accidentally dug them up or what happened to them.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Sunday.
Perhaps it happened as I did - I dug them once but next year they grew up in another place, Lisa.
DeleteSipulikukat ovat hyvin kauniita ja tuovat kukinnallaan kevään tullessaan.
ReplyDeleteKiitos!
DeleteI do love these plants and enjoy the blue color very much in spring. I haven't grown the white ones yet but you've encouraged me to try.
ReplyDeleteWhite pushkinia is a pretty one, Peter.
DeleteHappy week!
Beautiful flowers. I did not know that Pushkinia and Scilla could endure such cold winters as in St.Petersburg. I live in the east of Poland, where winters are also cold and I did not plant these flowers. I will now plant these flowers in a rocky garden. Greetings!
ReplyDeletePawanna, winter isn't too cold here, about -5 C, but there is a lot of snow that is good for the plants. My bulbouse overwinter well. So you could plant them with no doubt.
DeleteHugs!
Gracias Anna por venir a mi blog.
ReplyDeleteBesos!
I always love buying spring bulbs in the autumn but I'm not aware I ever saw pushkinia. I wonder if they have a different name here? I googled and found "squill", which I have also not heard of. Well, I have heard of them now! The idea of a strong scent appeals very much to me. I always yearn for the scent of spring!
ReplyDeleteDear Jenny, this little plant named Pushkinia or also Puschkinia is pretty nice in spring.
DeleteI've found the information for you here

I think it will help you purchase the Puschkinia bulbs.
Very beautiful pictures Nadezda. Scilla, I know and like very much, Pushkinia I am not familiar with but I will follow the link above..
ReplyDeleteSure you'll love Puschkinia, Alistair.
DeleteHugs!
I do love these plants, and I've planted lots of Scilla. You can also see lots of Blue Scilla blooming in Chicago's parks in june.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine the parks in spring, Jason.
DeleteSuch beautiful plants.

Thank you, Jan!
