My Garden in Mid-May

rose floribunda

It's mid-May. The long-awaited spring is here. The beginning of May was cold +5 C (40F), dark clouds with snow and hail. Then it became warmer, the leaves on roses began to grow, the sun appeared every day, the grass turned green again.

What makes me happy this spring? The greenhouse. I sowed parsley, coriander, celery, lettuce, everything grew, despite the first cold May days, because the greenhouse is warming up in the sun. Petunia and begonia seedlings, decorative bush cuttings are also there.

Nature finally came to it sense. The night/day temperature is +10 C/ +20 C (50/68 F) leaves began fast growing on gooseberry and currant bushes, lilac, elderberry, lonicera, dogwood and physocarpus.

Daffodils and scillas bloom beautifully, hyacinths and tulips started opening due to warm days. I hope to see all my tulips in full bloom soon.

Spiraea 'Golden globe' looks nice. Its young yellow-orange leaves decorate the green lawn. I love this plant because I always prune spirea to have a nice spherical yellow bush.

I was worried about rhododendrons, their wintering. Now they are fine, evergreens and azaleas have many flower buds.

Plum trees are in bloom

What is the weather in your place? How are your plants in May?

  1. Wonderful series of images, Nadezda, enough to make everyone believe that spring has finally arrived. Here too, after a very cool start to May the weather is slowly improving and I think the next week or so should be in the high teens.

    1. I do believe too David. I planted vegetables and apple trees started to blossom. They need warmth.
There are many birds in my garden and one couple has made a nest on the tuja. Wonderful!

  2. Hello dear Nadezda!

Your spring garden is so lovely! The plum trees are so beautiful. We had the same cold weather here in beginning of May. It's still not warm in the night, but it will be better soon I hope. My plants are growing well in the greenhouse, but they will stay there for a while. This night it was only 4 degrees Celcius, so they have it better in the greenhouse. I have a little electric oven and it's 12 degrees there in the night. That's much better :)
    Hugs!

    1. Wow, Marit! You heat the greenhouse, it is certainly better for plants. Unfortunately, I do not have an oven, but I have to set it due to unpredictable weather.

  10. Hi Nadezda, your garden is becoming quite lively. Isn't amazing how Roses don't need much encouragement from the sun to send out some leaves. I can't wait until my little baby plum tree blooms. It is only 3'tall. I hope it is as pretty as your plum tree. There is a lot blooming in my garden. It is warming up fast now. The Irises are about to go over. Enjoy these warmer days. Happy spring.

  14. Hi Nadezda – It is lovely to look at your beautiful plants, flowers and herbs. Here in Georgia it is already very warm – around 30 C or more. I have done nothing outside as my time is spent trying to clear out the house. Unfortunately ivy has taken roots all over the back yard. I will have to hire someone to get rid of it. The only plant I had in Nashville was a hyacinth I purchased in a pot at the store and it is past its blooming season now. I did have one daffodil somehow that came out in the front yard two months ago. I miss looking outside and seeing pretty flowers, but at least the ivy makes everything look very green.

    1. Oh, dear Vagabonde, the ivy is dangerous plant, it can kill other plants in the garden. It's pity you have no garden in Nashville, but it needs much work, so you should better relax.
      Kisses!

  16. Spring must be worth waiting for when you have such long cold winters. The beginning of SPring is one of my favourite times of year although May is also a top month. I love June for the roses but I have a rambling rose which is now the most beautiful sight. It does flower throughout the year, but never as much as it flowers at the start ...

    1. Jenny, I can imagine how wonderful is your rambler. You're lucky it flowers all year, mine blooms in June.

  17. Dear Nadezda,
I can feel your happy mood as the beauty of Spring arrives in your country. I feel the same way when bulbs and new buds appear here.
I have been away and will be posting about my holiday soon. At present I have a cold and recovering from jet lag. Look forward to catching up with your posts.
Happy days to you and your family

  18. It is only just warming up but most of the spring flowers you show are already finished in my garden. Lots of empty spaces still because I did almost no gardening last year and I have many tall weeds. It’s hard work but I hope to make some order soon. I love being out in the garden again, there is nothing better to lift a sad spirit. Today I put my geraniums out. Dahlias will come soon.

    1. Gardening is a hard work, especially weeding, Friko. I agree. Nature always lift mood, even in autumn. I grow perennial ground cover plants that hide the empty spots. Sure you know Ajuga, Lysimachia, Phlox subulata and others.
      Hugs!
