Mushroom Hunting
Many people in different countries love edible wild mushrooms, and sometimes it takes the suggestion that mushroom hunting is good in and of itself. As a child I often went to mushroom hunting with adults, so one of the best ways to help someone understand the joy of this activity is to simply take them out in the woods with you.
In Russia on the mushroom hunting day people get up as early as possible to spend the whole day in a forest. In autumn this practice is ever popular.
The intention of gathering mushrooms is simply to understand: mushrooms are food, an important element of traditional Russian cuisine. Mushrooms can be dried, roasted, boiled or pickled. I prefer mushroom and potato soup with sour cream. My favorite mushroom is chanterelle, although I love cooking other varieties of wild edible fungi.
I love strolling in the woods, enjoying autumnal beauty of the nature, the yellow leaves falling and flying, when grass and moss hides the fungi heads. What a joy to hold a nice healthy edible mushroom such as 'white' or 'red head" one. It's funny to find a family of fungi growing on a tree trunk.
Have you ever gone to mushroom hunting? Do you love eating wild mushroom, can you cook them?
I really enjoy cooking with wild mushrooms and I wish I knew more of the edible varieties. I am pretty careful what I pick and select only those I know to be safe.
ReplyDeleteI agree David, we have to be sure what mushroom are in our baskets. I never risk collecting wild mushrooms I don't know.
DeleteHola Nadezda, preciosa entrada, me encantan los hongos, tus fotos son preciosas. Un beso. Feliz otoño.
ReplyDeleteMe encanta que te gustan mi photos and la entrada nueva.
DeleteBuena semana!
When I was a child I was also going to mountains to hunt mushrooms however we are living in city centers now. :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment ReHiTu!
DeleteHello dear Nadezda!
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't know them so well, so I don't go on mushroom hunting. I'm afraid of them because many pepole here get damaged by eating mushrooms. So I go out in the woods without picking any :)
Hugs!
If you're not sure in wild mushrooms it's better not to pick them at all. I agree Marit.
DeleteAll the best to you!
Which mushroom is number 3 in the picture? It's fun looking. We collect a lot of mushrooms. This year the season started late and there are few mushrooms. Our young man is dyeing wool yarns with sponges ;-)
ReplyDeleteHere there are no many mushrooms this autumn too, Anne. This is Armillariella melea on the photo #3. I cook and fry them.
DeleteEl beso
Hello Dear Nadezda!
ReplyDeleteI love mushrooms. Unfortunately, the summer was hot and dry and there were no mushrooms. Nadezda, there are shows on your tube in your country. I am delighted with the films presented.
Hugs and greetings.
I'm interested in the films you watch on YouTube Lucja. What are they? I usually watch films ans dramas on-line, not on YouTube.
DeleteUna buona serata e felice inizio settimana
ReplyDeleteGracie, Giancarlo.
DeleteI do like mushrooms but would never have the confidence to pick wild ones.
ReplyDeleteI think there are no edible wild mushrooms in your place, Sue.
DeleteDear Nadezda!
ReplyDeleteI really like long walks in the woods and picking mushrooms. I prepare them in different ways.
I dry mushrooms for soup, and also cook them in water, then divide them into portions and freeze.
Then in winter I can make a delicious sauce from my favorite mushrooms.
I wish you a beautiful week. Hugs. Anita
You are a good hostess, Anita. I also love to collect and eat wild mushrooms, but I never froze them. I have to do like you to store mushrooms for the winter.
DeleteHello Nadezda,
ReplyDeletethis year the mushroom season here is short and not very good. (Not enough rain.) We like especially chanterelles and boletus and eat them in a creamy sauce with potatoes or pasta.
We also pick Lactarius trivialis and similar ones for a "mushroom salad" (with onions and cream).
Happy mushroom hunting!
I love chanterelles and boletus as well, Sara. I always cook soup with these mushrooms. Lactarius trivialis is very rare here, we call it 'milk fungi' because of its 'milk juice'. And yes there are no many mushrooms this autumn.
DeleteIt's great fun to get wild mushrooms in a mountain. My friends always eat same ones every autumn to avoid addiction.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that people eat wild fungi in Japan, roughterrain crane.
DeleteI really like walking in the woods and picking mushrooms but I don't eat them!
ReplyDeleteI admire your mushroom photos!
Greetings
I like to stroll in the woods as well, Ela.
DeleteHappy new week!
Fantastico post! Brava!
Sure your father and you have had a pretty good mushroom hunting Gabriele. Now some of younf people love do this too.
DeleteHave a nice day!
Your photographs are lovely to see.
ReplyDeleteI have seen mushrooms growing but never picked them …
I buy mine from the supermarket or Farmers Markets.
All the best Jan
Jan, mushrooms from supermarket or farmer are not wild, you can eat them without any risk.
DeleteHappy Tuesday.
I also love to find and photograph mushrooms, but it is not easy to see them, because I live in the city I can find some in the gardens of the company where I work.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos.
Hugs
Maria
It's interesting Maria that mushrooms grow in gardens and not in the woods.
Deletehappy Tuesday.
Thanks Agnes.
ReplyDeleteI like to go the forest to look for mushrooms than to eat them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos Nadezda!
Happy week! Hugs!
Tania, it's interesting to know there are fungi in Galicia.I can't imagine what they are.
DeleteHappy Tuesday!
I love the taste of mushrooms and would like to collect them. I would need to go to the country to find them, but do not know them well enough to pick without advice of someone with me.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are great. I especially like number three.
Hope Autumn is treating you well. Today is the first really warm day of Spring here, but it is still cold at night. Minimum 3C last night.
Betty, +3 C sure very cold vernal night is, take care. I love spring coming, the time of new plans.
DeleteCollecting mushrooms needs knowledge and one must be sure to pick edible ones.
Autumn is not cold +12 C but with raons and winds here.
Have a nice day!
I do pick mushrooms from the forrest, as you know! But it isn't a good mushroom year for us, only chantarelles. They are good though!
ReplyDeleteI love chanterelles as well Tistou. There are few of them this year here.
DeleteIt must be wonderful to go mushroom hunting with an expert in a country where it is popular, and in Russia I imagine you have such huge forests (and a relatively low population density) so you do not run out of mushrooms! Here, I am a little uneasy that people are making money by taking others out and showing them how to pick wild mushrooms in our much smaller woodlands. Sometimes even restaurants go into the public woods and take all the mushrooms. When I go walking I see fewer mushrooms than I did and I worry that these people are disrupting the environment. It's such a shame!
ReplyDeleteOh, Jenny, I’ve never heard of people who make money teaching others to pick the right mushrooms. Perhaps it is better to let them grow in the forest and decorate the environment.
DeleteI don't usually mushroom hunt but I enjoy seeing them when I am out in the woods. It is like finding a treasure. I am not sure which are edible. I haven seen the type of mushrooms you have pictured here.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting you have seen some types of mushrooms in your place, Lisa. What amazing plants!
DeleteHello Nadezda (thank you for our comments on my last post .. most appreciated !) ... I love this post of yours!
ReplyDeleteI love the woods and seeing what amazing plants live there .. mushrooms in particular are my favorite .. I think they are magical .. so beautiful and so useful too !
I can well imagine what fun it must be to be gathering them up for wonderful dishes in the colder weather.
I try to use them as much as possible too .. I think they are a mini miracle food that is so helpful for our bodies.
These pictures are stunning ... true eye candy to see ! Well done you !!;-)
Joy, I love just walk in the woods, to breath the fresh air, especially in pine forest. I usually cook mushroom for soup and sometime I fry chanterelles.
DeleteGlad you liked my photos.
