Tradescantia Virginiana
Tradescantia virginiana, the Virginia spiderwort - I'm sure most of gardeners are familiar with this plant. Many years I thought that Tradescantia is an indoor pretty flower. Once I was surprised to see Tradescantia virginiana or Virginia spiderwort growing outdoors. So I bought it for my garden and do not regret.
Tradescantia virginiana is a perennial plant up to 0.4 m. It is hardy for my zone 5a. It blooms from June to October, and the seeds ripen from August to October. It spreads itself, and when it is planted, it will take up more space.
The flowers are purple, reddish, densely blue, blue or white, in simple inflorescence. The flower has three petals, opens only for one day, but clusters of buds in each inflorescence guarantee a long, continuous flowering.
Do you have Virginia spiderwort in your garden? What other flowers do you think suit it?
Wonderful colours to start my day, Nadezda. How can I be anything but cheerful now?
ReplyDeleteGlad your day started well, David. Have a nice Wednesday.
DeleteThey are very beautiful, Nadezda! I have one myself, and it's wite and blue. I have plantet mine beside some heuchera.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice evening!
Sure tradescantia and heuchera look nice, Marit. I have no white only blue one.
DeleteHappy Wednesday!
Your garden looks like a floral paradise! Unfortunately I do not have this plant.
ReplyDeleteThis year I have a lot of herbal plants mint, oregano, hyssop, sage.
Greetings
Ela, I think the herbs decorate garden and our meal as well. I love tea with mint and monarda.
DeleteHugs!
Dear Nadezda!
ReplyDeleteTradescantia virginiana is very beautiful but unfortunately very expansive.
He likes to spread in the garden.
A healthy and happy week:)
You're right Lucja, tradescantia is an expansive plant. Here in short summer months it has no time to spread, so there is no this problem :-)
DeleteTodella kauniita. Valitettavasti minulla itselläni ei ole kyseistä kasvia.☀️🌼🌸
ReplyDeleteKiitos, Kruunuvuokko.
DeleteVery beautiful!
Hello Nadezda, I do have this spiderwort in my garden. I have several different shades blue or purple but I haven't seen a white one. Maybe one will develop here. It is a lovely time of year. So much going on in the garden.
ReplyDeleteGlad you have tradescantia in many shades. I agree Lisa, so much to do and to watch every day, the garden changes and new flowers appear.
DeleteHugs!
No sé si es la misma que tengo ¡ es bonita ! pero se extiende demasiado. Besdos.
ReplyDeleteSi, es extiende esa planta, Teresa. Buena semana!
DeleteI share your fondness for Tradescantia, the one you have is a perfect blue.
ReplyDeleteYes, the color is fantastic. Thank you Alistair.
DeleteI did not know this beautiful plant. The flower is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteThe first photo is fantastic.
It has my name (Virginia) ah! Ah! Ah!
Take care, hugs and all the best
Oh, your name is the same, Maria. Wonderful!
Deletehave a nice day.
Dear Nadezda!
ReplyDeleteHow nice to see this beautiful flower in your wonderful garden. I am glad that I also have it in my garden. These small, charming, purple flowers are the biggest tradescantia virginiana decoration.
Hugs and greetings.
Anita
You're right Anita, its small but very decorative flowers look wonderful in any garden. Sure your are pretty ones.
DeleteHugs!
What a beautiful and interesting plant, dear Nadezda - and your photos of it are lovely!
ReplyDeleteI needed to google this plant. Perhaps in Finland the Tradescantia are grown only indoors (?). As houseplants their common name is 'juoru', 'gossip', because they spread so fast and effectively. :)
Thank you for the interesting post! Stay well and healthy!
Sara, these tradescantias - indoor and outdoor - are different plants. Look at their leaves, stems. A houseplant has lianike stems and fragile leaves. The outdoor plant has straight stems and narrow long leaves. I think that this Tradescantia virginiana is also grown in Finland, possibly in the southern part.
DeleteHappy day!
Thank you, Agnes.
Dear Nadezda,
ReplyDeletesuch a beauty. And for sure: I love the combination!
Happy gardening and all my best
Elisabeth
Elisabeth, the color of this Tradescantia goes well to white, red and yellow flowers. On my photo it grows with red Begonia semperflorens.
DeleteIt is a beautiful flower, Nadezda! It's petals look like feathers, did not know that plant.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week!
Hugs!
This plant is not popular in gardens, Tania. I love the color as well.
DeleteHave a nice day!
Your tradescantia is early! Simply beutiful! have only T. andersoniana and its cultivars, but they are still in bud.
ReplyDeleteTistou, I think Tradescantia andersoniana is a hybrid of Tradescantia virginiana. Yours has another shape of petals.
DeleteHugs!
Such beautiful colour in your photographs, lovely blooms.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Glad you liked my photos, Jan.
DeleteHappy Thursday.
I have thought always of tradescantia as a pot plant for indoors, with colourful leaves. I looked it up and this is tradescantia zebrina, though. I didn't even know it had flowers! I am glad you featured them because they are very beautiful and rather unusual flowers, I think.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you call this plant 'tradescantia zebrina' Jenny, it has pretty flowers, I agree.
DeleteHappy weekend!
