Tradescantia virginiana, the Virginia spiderwort - I'm sure most of gardeners are familiar with this plant. Many years I thought that Tradescantia is an indoor pretty flower. Once I was surprised to see Tradescantia virginiana or Virginia spiderwort growing outdoors. So I bought it for my garden and do not regret.
Tradescantia virginiana is a perennial plant up to 0.4 m. It is hardy for my zone 5a. It blooms from June to October, and the seeds ripen from August to October. It spreads itself, and when it is planted, it will take up more space.
The flowers are purple, reddish, densely blue, blue or white, in simple inflorescence. The flower has three petals, opens only for one day, but clusters of buds in each inflorescence guarantee a long, continuous flowering.

You're right Lucja, tradescantia is an expansive plant. Here in short summer months it has no time to spread, so there is no this problem :-)

Hello Nadezda, I do have this spiderwort in my garden. I have several different shades blue or purple but I haven't seen a white one. Maybe one will develop here. It is a lovely time of year. So much going on in the garden.

ReplyDeleteI needed to google this plant. Perhaps in Finland the Tradescantia are grown only indoors (?). As houseplants their common name is 'juoru', 'gossip', because they spread so fast and effectively. :)

Sara, these tradescantias - indoor and outdoor - are different plants. Look at their leaves, stems. A houseplant has lianike stems and fragile leaves. The outdoor plant has straight stems and narrow long leaves. I think that this Tradescantia virginiana is also grown in Finland, possibly in the southern part.

Elisabeth, the color of this Tradescantia goes well to white, red and yellow flowers. On my photo it grows with red Begonia semperflorens.

Your tradescantia is early! Simply beutiful! have only T. andersoniana and its cultivars, but they are still in bud.

I have thought always of tradescantia as a pot plant for indoors, with colourful leaves. I looked it up and this is tradescantia zebrina, though. I didn't even know it had flowers! I am glad you featured them because they are very beautiful and rather unusual flowers, I think.
