As I need more plants for new plot,
I decided to create my own plant nursery. This spring to do this, I took
small pots with good soil and cut a lot of cuttings of decorative bushes,
roses, evergreens, perennials.

Since I did not have much experience in growing young plants, I thought
that all new cuttings would give me new plants, but it turned out that
only a few of them rooted and grew leaves. Now you can see some of them on
the garden shelves.

Initially,
the cuttings of roses were placed in the greenhouse, then when I decided
that they were rooted, I moved the pots outdoors. Some new roses look
good, others seem sick. The problem is that it is said that only young
stems can be used for rooting. Now young and last year's rose stems are
growing in pots.

I have the climbing rose Flammentanz and want to do some cutting to
root and plant them in the new plot. Now it's so pretty, blooms with
big red flowers.
Have you ever grown your own plants? What is your experience?
Looks like your plant nursery has been a great success, Nadezda, and you have used the additional space to good advantage.

I try to root roses and to have my own ones, to save money Elisabeth. To root them you need to cut their young stems in spring. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteI have made plants of Physocarpus before, and they grow very well. I have also divided many hosta, and they grow like grass here.
Flammentanz is a very hardy rose, and I had it in my old garden. I remember it became very big :)
I love Flammentanz rose as well Marit. Now I have some young roses and will plant them in new space. You're right Physocarpus is rooted well, want to make a fence of it.

ReplyDeleteTeresa, creo que el geranio (pelargonium) se propaga fácilmente, me gusta hacerlo. Las rosas son más malhumoradas en nuestro clima. Te deseo éxito en el cultivo de nuevas plantas.

ReplyDeleteI think we have spoken about this before: I have grown for example Cornus, Ribes and some hardy roses from cuttings. I have tried to reproduce roses also this year, the very dry June meant lots of carrying water to them.
My seed sowing hasn't been so successful. The best results came with lavender, the plants are still alive after very strange winters. :)

I remember you wrote about growing shrubs and hardy roses, Sarah. In fact, breeding your own is much cheaper than buying new ones. I have never sown lavender - I am afraid that this is not hardy to our winter.
DeleteI think Mr. Doyle wrote his Sherlock with a different character, habits and behavior than Cumberbatch plays in the new series.

DeleteI do love divide plants, especially hostas, bulbs, but I can't divide rose or rhododendron. Therefore I need to do cuttings and to root them. Sure your experience is successful.
