Dr Poehl and Sons' Pharmacy

Today I would like to suggest you, my friends, another virtual  tour, since real travel is not yet available. I want to tell you about the old famous pharmacy in Saint petersburg.

  The Dr. Poehl's pharmacy

The owner of the pharmacy was Prof. Dr. A. Poehl (1850-1908), a well-known pharmacist at that time, supplier of the Court of His Imperial Majesty. The drugs he developed are still in use.

Since 1873, the young master of pharmacy Alexander Poehl began to run the pharmacy laboratory. This man, as well as his sons turned out to be not only a talented scientist, but also a capable businessman.

A. Poehl inherited a pharmacy from his father in 1875. The Poehl's pharmacy was a whole complex that included a production pharmacy, a research laboratory, a pharmaceutical factory (which operated until 1927), warehouses.

A. Poehl's scientific works were devoted to the problems of social hygiene. In general, only for 25 years of the laboratory's work, 121 publications on hygiene, forensic and physiological chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry have been published.

After the revolution, since 1922, Poehl's once famous pharmacy eventually became just a communal one. Later, the plant was closed. But even in the 1970s and 80s. citizens continued to come from all over the city "to Poehl's" for medicines.

The restoration was in 1983, then The Domestic Pharmacy History Museum was opened in the Poehl's pharmacy.

Do you go to any pharmacy? Does it look old or not? Have you been to any medical museum?

  1. Hi Nadezda,

Great post! I like the old pharmacy. It looks very nice. Here we have a new pharmacy. I have never been to a medical museum, but I have been to a dentist museum. It was very scary.
    Hugs!

    1. I guess I wouldn't go to a dentist museum, Marit. Every time I go to the dentist, I am afraid.
      Glad you liked this story.

  2. What a fascinating story. The pharmacy I go to is modern, gleaming with stainless steel and plastic, all sanitized, looking efficient but not always living up to its promise. As for a medical museum, I don't think we even have one here. Years ago there was an open house at the University of Toronto and I toured their medical school and its labs.

    1. David, there are many modern pharmacies in the city but this one is very famous.
      The museum is popular too.

  3. Dear Nadezda!
I am glad that you present interesting buildings from your wonderful city on your blog. During the pandemic, the journeys shifted to the background. I hope you will present us more monuments from St. Petersburg.
The history of the pharmacy and its creator is very interesting. Thank you very much for letting me see her. This year I visited the medical museum at the Branicki Palace in Białystok.
I wish you good health and best regards:)

  9. What a beautiful and interesting place. I often think how intriguing it must have been to visit a pharmacy 100 years ago. We have a few here which still have the old fittings, but nearly all have been modernised. I saw a wonderful one in Spain last year in a town called Fuengirola - the exterior was quite stunning, tiled all over with pictures of old fashioned pharmaceutical items! Thanks for this interesting post.

    1. You're welcome Jenny.I think that several old pharmacies are still in use in different places, so these photos remind you of another one in Spain.
      Take care, hugs.
