Lily Martagon (Turk's Cap Lily)

The wonderful Lily Martagon variety 'Chameleon' has been growing in my garden for 3 years. This year the lilies bloom profusely. Last years they were small, without flowers.
These lilies are of the Family Liliaceae, hybrid lily,
grow well in zone 3-9, on moist, humus-rich soil.

I planted the lilies next to the thuja, and they look beautifully against the golden background of the thujas. There is partial shade, sun in the morning. Their height is about 1 meter. 'Chameleon' lilies bloomed for two weeks.

'Chameleon' lilies open pink and after a few days turn salmon and yellow with dark spots.
All Martagon lilies are gorgeous with their numerous flowers, natural appearance, self-supporting stems, hardy growth and shade tolerance. (Wiki)

Another Martagon lily variety 'Tiger lily' grows for years and blooms every August. It's not tall as 'Chameleon' but is colorful as well.

Do you grow any Lily Martagon varieties? What is your experience?

  2. We don’t grow lilies any more as we had them spoiled by lily beetle which was a shame as yours are lovely.

    1. I spray the lily buds before they open, Sue. I always use chemical treatment against beetles.

    1. Надежда, я случайно купила 3 луковицы этих лилий на распродаже. Они были такие жалкие, а теперь выросли красавицы.

  7. The lilies are beautiful. We had a lot of different lilies, but we discarded them all. We got tired of the Scarlet lily beetle (Lilioceris lilii). They destroyed the flowers every year.

    1. Anne, I spray fungicide against the Scarlet lily beetle before the lily buds open. I lost many of pretty lilies as well.

  8. Niin kauniit liljat. ❤️ Minulla kasvaa puutarhassamme myös tiikerililjoja (Lilium lancifolium), jotka ovat hyvin kestäviä ja kauniita. 😊

  9. Hello Nadezda ! This is a wow factor lily !
I have one .. the name escapes me at the moment .. it was supposed to be Guinea Gold but it turned out to be something else .. I loved it all the same .. it was my first time seeing it bloom this year and it did last a long time .. small but numerous flowers .. and of course we have to deal with the lily beetles .. so that sucks some of the pleasure out of them .. however ? I am not giving up .. lilies are such beautiful flowers !

    1. Lilies grow well at home but they require high humidity. If you can do this condition you will have nice flowers.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  13. Dear Nadezda!
Your lilies are beautiful. I love their smell, colors and shapes.
Unfortunately, my lilies are a delicacy for voles.
    Hugs and greetings:)

    1. Lucja, I grow some lily bulbs in the plastic baskets, so voles, mice and moats can't eat them.

  15. Lovely photos, Nadezda! The 'Chameleon' has a wonderful combination of colours.
Lilium martagon seems to be an interesting plant.
In Finland, when we speak about Tiger lily, we usually mean Lilium lancifolium. My mother had them when I was a child. They look rather similar, so this post feels also nostalgic to me.
I'm sorry you haven't been able to visit Finland yet. Corona restrictions having been somewhat lifted, there are indeed more cases also here. But every day we will be nearer to the victory over the virus!

    1. You're right, Sarah Lilium lancifolium is colorful and interesting. Of course, your mother had many lovely tiger lilies.
I think that the new vaccine, wherever it is produced, will rid people of this terrible disease.
      Take care of yourself!
