Berries, Vegitables & Flowers In August

The third month of summer has come. The weather is fine, there is sun and rain, the wind is warm. Everything favors the harvest of vegetables and berries. I started picking black and red currants. The blackcurrant did not fully ripen; a few unripe berries remain on the clusters. I think for now to leave unripe ones on the bushes, later I will collect the remaining black currants to make compote or jelly.

Redcurrants hang beautifully on the branches. It's a pleasure to collect berries, only empty racemes cannot be left so they will rot.

The squash has grown too big this summer. Probably because of the heat. Although I did not water them often. What to do with them now? I will most likely clean them from seeds, peel, cut into small pieces and freeze them for the winter. So they last longer. What do you do with the big zucchini or squash?

Tomatoes turn red little by little. There are quite large tomatoes, there are also small ones. I will first collect the large ones and hope that the small ones will grow up and turn red. They are sweet!

Peppers can already be used in fresh salad and eggplants also can be fried and baked. Japanese eggplants have been planted in the greenhouse for the second year and I am happy with them. They ripen quickly, long and dense. The peel has no bitterness and is thin; you can eat it with the peel. If there are a lot of eggplants, I want to cut them into slices and freeze for the winter.

Here are more photos of my garden in August:

Hope the weather will be favorable for vegetables, berries and flowers in August. If the nights are not cold, there will be a good harvest of vegetables. I want to preserve my harvest as much as possible for the winter.

Happy August, friends. Enjoy summer days!

  2. Your garden has been wonderfully productive, Nadezda. Fresh vegetables are unmatched for their sweetness and goodness. The kind of eggplant you show is usually referred to as Chinese Eggplant here, and it is the only kind that we buy. Fresh local peaches are available here and they are delicious this year.

  5. Hello Nadezda,
Your fruits and veggies look amazing girl ! Those red currents look beautiful .. the birds haven't gotten to them yet and that is lucky .. if I were a bird I would be busy in your garden ;-) LOL
The name of the clematis is Madame Julia Correvon , I have had it for years and transplanted it many times .. it keeps going strong no matter what.
I really like the apricot coloured lilies that you have .. that is a really pretty colour ! Do you have their name by any chance ?

    1. Joy, thanks for the clematis variety name. I love this flower. I think the lily name is Apricot Joy.
Glad you liked red currant, and I'm glad the birds do not like it :-)

  6. I have been alone for three years and I feel very bad about it. I have no energy and no willingness to do anything. Good thing I have Pepa. I greet you.

    1. Giga, I'm sorry that you have been feeling so lonely for 3 years. I think you have lived for many years as a couple, knowing everything and feeling the same as both of you. The loss is heavy.
Pepa helps you get rid of sad thoughts.

  8. Oh you have a lot af edible things in your garden. I only have fruit: red current, blueberries, apples and pears. And a lot of figs.
I think, you also have more flowers, than I have. Your garden looks lovely. I ought to have more august flowering plants for me, the bees and the butterflies.
    Greetings Lisbeth

    1. Here are a few butterflies this year, Lisbeth. Have no idea why. It's raining every day now so I do not think about more August flowering. Hopefully there are a lot of apples for apple jam :-)

  9. Hello Nadezda, it's great to see your garden and harvest. There are same plants as we have but you have more of everything. :)
I admire especially your tomatoes (are they beef tomatoes?) and your lilies of wonderful colours.
In Finland, many people freeze "new potatoes" that are often rather small, boiling them for some minutes, cooling, drying the surface and freezing them in a freezer bag, trying to remove any excess air. In winter, pop them straight into boiling water, and control carefully the boiling time, not too long. :) Good appetite!
    Stay well!

    1. Oh, what good advice Sara. Thank you! I've never frozen new potatoes. I should try now because now I know how to cook them.
My tomatoes are of 'Pink' variety, they are fleshy and sweet. There are a few seed inside, I liked to collect and have my own seeds.
      Take care!

  10. Do you have to net your fruit as we do. Without netting the birds would strip our redcurrants,

    1. Sue, I never net currant bushes. The birds as blackbirds, waxwings, starlings, robins do not love red and black currant. But they do love chokeberry (aronia), June berry (Amelanchier), sea buckthorn (Нippophae).

  17. My god! You have such great crops this summer! Eggplants and cucumbers are so many, and tomatoes looks juicy and meaty!
Lucky you to have black and red currants. They do not grow in North America (or many just not commonly grown, and as a result these berries not sold in our stores), and I almost forgot how do they taste…
In my vegetable garden each summer the same problem- fungus. I use organic ways to fight it. This year I saved tomatoes, but cucumbers that never got fungus this time are all dead :-(
Wishing you a great time in your garden!

    1. My vegetables have the same problem, Irina. In July, I noticed small spider mites on cucumbers. I use chemical methods to deal with them. It was karbofos (malathion). Now they are all dead and the cucumbers and eggplants are healthy, both growing in the same greenhouse.
      Thanks for your kind words.
