November Changes In The Garden

Much has changed in November with the onset of cold weather. Western winds often blow, bringing endless rains. Sometimes I think, looking out the window at streams of water, where does so much water come from? Really from the sea?

On TV they show the weather in different regions of Russia. I see that in some parts of the country, far from the sea, there is already snow and winter has come.
But let's not talk about winter, which will not come here soon, I hope :-)
In the garden, water is visible in all the pits, ditches, even shallow puddles appeared on the road.  I walked around the garden and thought it's good that a few years ago they made drainage in my garden.

On chokeberry and Parthenocissus, the leaves have fallen off and only dark blue berries adorn the bare branches.

The remnants of leaves on the bushes of Symphoricarpos albus are covered with drops of yesterday's rain and the white berries glisten  and fast dry in the sun .

The rhododendrons of course rejoice in the rain. I watered them a lot in September, I thought that the autumn would be dry. But everything has changed and they now have a lot of water.

As usual, Thujas and Juniperus do not require special care before winter. They tolerate rain and snow well. Sometimes, however, the snow breaks their branches. When I arrive in winter, I shake the snow off their branches.

While I was walking between the plants and taking pictures, the sun came out. How happy it was in the garden! I took a few more photos of the sunlit plants.

A very bold chamomile continues to bloom, but I think its boldness will quickly end in the rains. Silverberry threw all the leaves and its silvery berries remained on bare branches.  The last flowers of Aster novae-angliae and Sedum are decorated with drops of rain.

The last photo was taken in a greenhouse. It's just a heaven for roses. I am growing several cuttings of roses for planting in spring and a little one decided to bloom.
What is your November?

  1. Your photos are great Nadezda. November is indeed a rainy month. Last year we had rain from October to December, but not this year. Today it is 8 degrees and very warm weather here. I hope it will dry up at your place. The rose in your last photo is so beautiful.

  2. I am happy to see that there are berries on the trees for the birds. It will help them through the winter. At your latitude there must be few hours of daylight by now.

    1. You're right, David. Daylight hours are short, dark at 18.00. I am very glad that these berries will help the birds on cold days. The berries remain hanging on the branches until spring.

  9. First of all, our November has been mainly mild, also now the temperature is about +4 C. It has been snowing for two times but it all melted away rather fast.
Dear Nadezda, thank you for these wonderful photos. The drops of rain on petals and leaves look spectacular. Your plants are beautiful and healthy, and the sun rays make everything look even more cheerful.
But you do eat the Aronia berries, don't you! They are very good for the health. You can mix them for example in a smoothie so the sour taste some people don't like doesn't disturb. :)
    Hugs. Take care!

    1. Sara, I love to eat the chokeberry when it's ripe. Several years ago I made wine from chokeberry by adding sugar. I also love smoothies with them and bananas. I also leave the berries on the branches to feed the birds in winter.
Glad you like my photos. Happy November.

  10. Dear Nadezda!
Your plants look nice and healthy in the November garden. The pictures with raindrops in particular are beautiful!
In Poland, this year's autumn is exceptionally sunny and warm. Unfortunately, it has not rained in my region for 2 months, so we are watering the garden intensively. Drought could harm plants more than possible winter frosts ;-))
    I warmly greet you!
    Hugs!

  17. Oh bother, my comment got lost. Try again:

I have almost nothing left in the garden in the way of colour. But I am growing some winter shrubs which have colourful stems. Perhaps I will go out when there is some sunshine and take photos. It's cold even in England/Wales now and the garden is mainly brown and beige; I am leaving some herbaceous perennials and their seedheads and of course, shrubs and berries for the birds.
