Preparation For Storing Plants

The summer season ends and preparations for storing plants for winter begin. In the north, many plants cannot survive the winter if they were left in the soil or even just in a greenhouse. For example, Dahlias, Callas and Cannes.

I have a bad experience with storing canna roots. I left them in the greenhouse, wrapped in a special cloth. Despite this, when it was -20 C, they froze and in the spring I threw them away. Cannes were beautiful, with bright red flowers and striped leaves.
Since then, I do not want to risk losing the plants. This summer, the dahlias bloomed beautifully and the bushes grew strongly. When I dug up dahlia bushes, I saw that large thick roots appeared. Of course, I want to keep them during the winter period.

There are many ways to store roots. For example, put them in the basement, cover the roots with wax, put them in a cool place in sphagnum moss.
This last one works for me. I have a lot of sphagnum moss and have a cool place. Therefore, in October, I decided to dry the roots well, clean them from the ground and put them in a box with moss in a cool place. Of course, I need to check the condition of the roots from time to time and moisten the moss so that the roots do not dry out.

Do you store plants during the winter? What methods do you use?

  1. I have given up dahlia, Nadezda. I think it's so difficult to store them in the winter. They bloom late here, and I have a lot of camellias in my basement to take care of. Your dahlias are looking great!

    1. You are right Marit. Sometimes I think to grow dahlias as annuals, it is problematic to store them. But dahlias are so beautiful! Perhaps in the spring I will buy roots, and in the fall I will throw them away.

  4. I Have the first dahlia you show as well. It is very large and very beautiful. We had a very dry summer and many plants did not flower until late in the season.
After the first frost the dahlia green dies back . That's when I dig them up, clean the earth off, dry them and put them in a box in the garage. In the spring they sprout and I separate the roots and get more plants than the year before.
Mine are still in the ground now, it is still very mild and there is a lot of rain, which is good for them. But winter will come and I will have to take them in then.

    1. Friko, you are such a seasoned gardener and I'm sure your dahlia roots will overwinter well in your garage. I hope I can keep them in the sphagnum box.

Autumn is just about finished and we are getting very cool nights now .. I still have chores to finish in my garden .. BIG sigh ! LOL, Take care !
PS .. no, sadly I don't store any roots .. I know they would not survive my touch ! haha

    1. Joy, I know this type "dinner plate" - it's a big and pretty dahlia. Autumn here is also rainy and cool, last week the first snow fell. Have a nice week, stay well!

  9. What a beautiful post, Nadezda! Your Dahlias are really lovely and I hope they will winter well. I too have some Dahlia roots (that I simply store in a cardboard box in a cool room). I also have two recently received, happily green Hebes that I hope to keep alive for the next year. I have bought seaweed extract for them. :)
Your videos are wonderful. I love your skilful work, the beautiful views and the well chosen music.
Thank you for your comment. <3 I'm happy to hear you are well. Take care!

    1. Thanks for your advice, Sara. Since I have sphagnum, I will put the roots in a box with it. I hope it overwinters well.
I'm glad you liked my watercolors, I'm just learning. All the best!

  10. We need to lift our dahlias bit fortunately they survive in the greenhouse under some protective cover. It seems to be the damp that kills them here.

    1. Thanks for your advice Sue. My dahlias didn't overwinter in the greenhouse. It was too cold.

  12. Ciao!
