Summer Is Over...

Summer is over... here in the North.
Autumn is coming with red falling leaves, harvest, rains, cold nights, clouds. Here are some late summer flowers those are still in bloom despite of cold nights.
Dahlias and gladioli are in bloom and their red, orange, striped and white heads are waving under rain and wind.

Lilies fade and only yellow and orange ones decorate the flower bed. They  tolerate rain well.

I'm pleased that my clematises continue blooming till October but then they need to be cut and cover with dry leaves for wintering.

 'Jackmani', 'miss Bateman' and 'Justa'

Begonias are not so hardy and the first frost will kill their nice flowers. It's so sad! Therefore I try to move them in my greenhouse before frost.

Tradescantia still is flowering as well. This summer only few buds were on its stems, have no idea why.

I bought 3 bulbs of crocosmia (montbretia) when I visited the Keukenhof garden, The Netherlands. They raised well and are in bloom since mid-August.

Two varieties of Hydrangea paniculata flower as mad. One of them 'Grandiflora' is 10 years old bush and another one 'Lime light' is 3 years, is still short.

That's all for now, summer was cold and then hot. However I love summer: all plants do their best: green, bright, colorful, growing, blooming. What will coming autumn be?

What was this summer in your garden? Have you got harvest? Are you pleased with your new plants?
Thank you!

  2. You still have a lot in bloom Nadezda and some beautiful things beside.
Nights are cool here too, in fact cooler than they normally are at this time of the year. I hope it does not mean the winter will be early.

  4. Sometimes I miss living in the north but when I talk to my family still there and read posts like yours, I am glad to be living here where we won't have frost until late October or sometimes even mid to late November. It still feels like summer here although the days are getting shorter. Your blooms look so beautiful and it's sad to think of them going away for another year. Happy end of summer, Nadezda!

  5. Your dahlias are so beautiful. I really love dahlia, but have never lucky on growing dahlia. I don't know how many times I've planted this plant, from seeds, tuber or little plants, all failed. I think I have to learn more about growing dahlia.

    1. They need dry soil, I think. Before I planted dahlias in spots with wet and acid soil and they never grew well or died. Now I raise dahlias in pots, where soil is dry. Thank you Endah!

  9. Such pretty plants in bloom Nadezda. It turned autumnal here in the UK too, but apparently the hot weather is due to return next week. I have begonias that will need hiding away in the winter too, I nearly always forget until it's too late! I love your crocosmia, so much nicer than the variety I had in my garden.

    1. My begonias will soon be in a greenhouse now, because of cold nights. This crocosmia is a new for my garden, don't know how it will be stored in winter.Thank you Paula!

  10. There's still a lot of colour in your garden Nadezda! Beautiful flowers! Don't ask how summer has been here or how the garden looks, it's one big disaster actually and summer was cold and rain, rain, rain, we can't even mow the lawn because it's turned into a soggy swamp again. I so hope Autumn won't be that wet and we will be able to enjoy the beautiful colours of nature in Autumn.
    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. It's pity your lawn is as a swamp, Marian. I always regret looking at my lawn in a rain when water covers all grass..
Maybe September will be dry and warm in your place.

  12. You have still lots of blooms in your garden Nadezda, I like the special dahlia on the first picture. Here summer started early this year but it's also early finished. I think it was nice but too short, but I may not complain your summer there far in the north is even shorter.

  14. What a lovely variety of blooming plants you have in your garden Nadezda! I love the first dahlia photo. I have not seen that one before. So nice to have beautiful clematis blooming into October.
I'm sorry you are having a short summer. We are just starting to see daffodils, dutch iris, and native clematis beginning to come into flower. We have enjoyed some beautiful sunny days this past week, up to 21C! This the start of the busy time in the garden!
Thank you for sharing all of the beauty.

  16. Lots of pretty late summer flowering blooms in your garden Nadezda, I am so fond of lilies, but all mine went in the blazing summer heat we had in July. August has been cold here in London, I hope we get summer back in September. Your crocosmia is lovely, which variety is it?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I do not know what variety it is because bought crocosmia in a street garden shop in Amsterdam, 3 bulbs for 1 euro. All they are scarlet and high.
I do hope September in London is warm and I can visit Kew.

  18. What lovely blooms you still have, Nadezda; it looks like the height of summer, not the end of it. Fall is still a few weeks away here, and it's been hot and humid. I am looking forward to cooler days, but not frost--summer went by too quickly! 'Limelight' is one of my favorites; I love seeing these huge blooms at the end of summer.

    1. "Limelight" is my favorite too, Rose. Although it's young bush it blooms perfectly. You're in summer, think the weather will cooler day by day in your place.
      Thank you!

  19. It's always a sad moment, when summer starts slipping away. However, your garden looks still very colourful and summery! This dahlia on first pic truly looks outstanding! And crocosmia is very beautiful! I haven't seen this colour before.
Those cold nights I'm also worried about, first frost could take my dahlias and cannas away with a blink of an eye. I really hope that this cool spell will past with no damage to tender plants and we could enjoy our late bloomers little longer!
Currently I'm waiting for some Galanthus bulbs to arrive from England so I still have some gardening tasks to fulfil this year!

    1. I agree, Tistou. I was worrying about my begonias and dahlis too. As a result I moved begonias in the greenhouse and dahlias are near the warm wall now, because they grow in containers:))
I bought some daffodils and striped crocuses from The Netherlands and some tulips from our nursery. They are enough large bulbs.
      Have a nice week!
