Hedgehogs In The Garden

By  Angela Wybrow

 I went outside to retrieve the washing one night;
It was dark, apart from a glimmer of moonlight.

Suddenly, I was aware of a very strange sound.
Feeling rather worried, I began to look around.
To my surprise, I saw two hedgehogs there;
Busy searching for their food, without a care.
Gone were my former feelings of anxiety and fright;
They were swiftly replaced with joy and sheer delight.

 I stood and watched the two hedgehogs in total awe,
As I’d never been that close to a live hedgehog before.
 I had absolutely no idea that these creatures roamed,
Unseen by me, each night, so very close to our home.

I regaled the hedgehog with milk  but he did not like itThe hedgehogs went to look for other food.

  1. The hedgehogs can't drink milk, but they like Baltic herrings, if you have...

    1. Yes, Rosemary, they are the night animals. Perhaps, the hedgehogs looked for the apples those are on the ground around the apple tree. Thank you!

    1. Astrid, I was not trying to hedgehogs were similar to the drawings!
      I myself had seen them the second time in the garden, I think because of they searched for the fallen apples in the garden. Thank you!

  6. Never, never, feed hedgehogs milk. It's bad for them.
    Give them cat food, dog food, even bread soaked in water, but no milk.

    We have hedgehogs visiting but I let them find their own food; they eat my slugs and snails and are therefore very welcome.

    How did you get so close to them? Wonderful photos.

    1. Frico, thank you, now I know that hedgehogs can't drink milk! The neighbors gave me cat food for them. There are a lot of snails in my garden, that is a good food for them.
      This hedgehog was not afraid of the people, was very curious, that was wonderful for taking photos.
