Last Days of November

November is a season when temps drop very fast and warmth gives way to cold and snow. The last days were very characteristic for coming winter time.
Some days ago I took my camera and drove to my summer cottage. The sun was very low, although it was noon. The sun rays were seen between trunks of birches. It seemed that autumn would continue more and more:

There were lots of dry grasses, stems of flowers, raspberry, solidago. I liked dark red leaves, they got their color after first frost. The fluffy dry flowers of solidago lost their yellow color and shone in autumnal low sun, red rose hips brightened bushes.

Yesterday night and day dark snowy clouds had flown and thin layer of snow covered all around. When I arrived to my garden golden autumn had given way to white winter.

Here is the poem 'November'
November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.

Poem by  Elizabeth Coatsworth

I do love the cup of hot tea when 'kettle sings', nothing else to do but wait for next spring.
What are these days in your place?
Happy belated Thanksgiving Day!

  2. It has been a slow autumn here and there are still enough leaves on the trees to look pretty, in places. I don't like this time of year becaase you know there is the long winter to come.... However, without winter there would be no joy in summer.

    1. Yes, Jenny, it's said: 'cognition comes through comparison'. We love warm seasons because winter is long and dark.Have a nice weekend!

  3. The photo of the roses and the lovely poem capture November perfectly. November here is brown - remaining leaves, grass, plants. Everything is brown. And, when there is this much brown, I know the next color is white, and white I have to move. :-) The cold of the long winter is not what gets me. The gray and gloomy days are what wear we down. I guess Mother Nature forgets that we all do better with a little sunshine in our lives. :-) Happy Friday.

    1. I'd love more sunshine here as well Judy. The days are gray and rainy. Sometimes is snowing but it melts fast. I do think mother nature forgot the northern areas :(

  4. Beautiful sunrays through the trees Nadezda and I really do love the frosty winter photos. Winter starts so early in the north. Here we have dull and wet November days and until now only one frosty morning. All leaves are now fallen off the trees and I'm looking forward to sunny cold mornings.
    Have a nice weekend Nadezda!

  5. A lovely poem! Although we did not have had temperatures below zero, winter is coming. The days are grey and short. Not my cup of tea! Let's hope the kettle keep singing. Groetjes,
    Hetty

  6. We have many of the same grasses and wildflowers in our fields too. I find their shapes and colours so pretty at this time of year. We've only had a small taste of snow, but of course much more will follow! I love your photos of the snow crystals on your plants, so beautiful, especially the white against the red rosehips.

    1. My roses have finished their season and are coated for wintering, Rosemary. These last ones - Grootendorst roses are hardy enough and they winter without covering. I'd taken pictures when the first snow fell on their flowers.

  13. Stunning photos of your November garden. They fit beautifully with the poem. My garden is not as cold as yours but the days here are short now and we're having lots of wind and rain. Reasons for cups of tea and lighting candles.
