There
is a little feeder for small birds such as sparrows, titmice,
finches, thrushes Fairfield, goldfinches, robins on the apple tree in my garden. I've put some food there: sunflower seeds, oat, bread crumbs.
But magpies decided
to feast there and were trying to squeeze into a small feeder.
When I got closer to it - there already was nothing!
When I got closer to it - there already was nothing!
'Maggie
was a magpie, a very pretty bird'
Author:
Porter G.
Maggie
was a magpie,
A very pretty bird.
To say that Maggie was a thief
You’d think would be absurd.
But just like all her family
She liked to look around
For pretty little objects
That were waiting to be found.
A very pretty bird.
To say that Maggie was a thief
You’d think would be absurd.
But just like all her family
She liked to look around
For pretty little objects
That were waiting to be found.
One
day she carried home a knife,
As sharp as sharp can be,
It spoiled poor Maggie’s feathers
For it cut them all, you see.
Maggie didn’t like that
And she threw the knife away,
And decided not to steal again,
For her, crime did not pay!
As sharp as sharp can be,
It spoiled poor Maggie’s feathers
For it cut them all, you see.
Maggie didn’t like that
And she threw the knife away,
And decided not to steal again,
For her, crime did not pay!
Magpies are wise and beautiful birds! great pictures, Nadezda! Have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteSatu, they are too wise and thieves. Thank you!
DeleteBeautiful bird pictures Nadezda! Magpies are such a robbers, they drive away all pretty little birds, I have them in my garden too.
ReplyDeleteThe magpie poem is lovely, I like reading poems.
Janneke, I'm glad you liked this poem! You're right, magpies are robbers: once I wanted to wash my hand in the garden sink and left there a soap, so a magpie stolen it! Thank you!
DeleteHello Nadezda girl ! I don't know if we have those birds here .. I haven't seen them .. they are very pretty ! .. Our birds are confused with the weird weather we have been put through .. I think everyone is! .. very nice arrangement for the magpie pictures ! have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteJoy
Joy, I've read that this specie is European Magpies, they are black and white. We here call them 'magpie-white-sided' and have children's poems and games with magpie-robber. Thank you!
DeleteCute poem! It made me laugh : ) And your pictures of that magpie are really entertaining.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Laurrie!
DeleteHello Nadezda... I'm very pleased that you stopped in at my blog and left the connection to your post... the bird pictures are great and I'm looking forward to looking through your blog... always exciting to meet new folks and see what their gardens are like! Larry
ReplyDeleteLarry, I hope you will read my blog. I love to visit yours, nice photos and wonderful garden. Thank you!
DeleteFun poem! We don't have magpies here in Washington but we had them in Alaska. Pretty birds. I love the first two pictures of the cute little bird with his feathers all puffed out to keep him warm.
ReplyDeleteLittle birds suffer of cold, so I try to leave them more food. The magpies eat all in the feeders, bad birds!
DeleteThank you, Peter!
I think your Magpies are going to keep stealing as long as there are seeds in your feeders. Companies are inventing more and more feeders with cages around the outside that only the smaller birds can fit in to get the seeds. I love the colouring of your Magpies Nadezda, black and white, they look as if they are wearing a black suit with a white shirt, very fancy :)
ReplyDeleteRosemary, it's good idea to make a cage around my feeder! These magpies are dressed well and I'm glad when I see them far from my garden! Thank you1
DeleteMagpies are clever birds! They can get food out of anything and you can can just as well give up trying to prevent it , they will win anyway! Nice pictures and poem, have a great week-end, take care, Helene.
ReplyDeleteYou're right,Helene. Thank you!
DeleteBeautiful pictures! I know everything about larger birds scaring away the cute small ones. But magpies are beautiful birds as well we have to admit and worth taken a photo of.
ReplyDeleteFunny poem!
Bye,
Marian
Yes, magpies seem very nice birds on the photos, but really they are noisy and thievish birds. Thank you, Marian!
DeleteDear Nadezda,
ReplyDeleteI like the photos of the magpie in your garden. It is true that they are handsome birds. They are also noisy!. In Australia they have a different bird called a magpie. They have a wonderful song. You can listen to it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYEYc8Ge3nw
Bye for now
Kirk
Kirk, I've listened this magpie's song, it's another than I heard here, they cry sharply. Thank you1
DeleteMagpies is a big thief and on top of little birds beat. Even kill them.
ReplyDeleteThey are hanging bacon. Magpies quickly multiply. There are too many ....
The poem is very beautiful.
I wish you have a nice weekend.
I send greetings.
Lucia
Lucia, I'm glad you liked this poem, I know you love poetry. Thank you!
DeleteInteresting post and photos, Nadezda.
ReplyDeleteSneaks, thieves and bullies are everywhere in nature - you have proven that even birds are like that! But nature is survival of the fittest. I guess magpies have learned what they must do to survive. Their nasty disposition hides under a very pretty exterior.
Astrid, it's true you wrote! I decided to change the shape of this feeder and make it more suitable for little birds only. Thank you!
DeleteLovely poem Nadezda, I love magpies, we have other birds here like noisy miners and indian miners that drive the prettier birds away. I'm lucky if I see a magpie in next doors backyard. Ben chases all the birds out of our backyard - it's his territory.
ReplyDeleteOh, Karen, you've a good helper, your Ben, wonderful doggy. Unfortunately I have not a pet in my garden. Thank you!
DeleteWonderful pictures Nadezda! I love the pictures of the Magpie. I think they are such a pretty bird.
ReplyDeleteThey're pretty and thievish birds.:(( Thank you, Lona!
DeleteHallo Nadezda!Lovely poem!!I see magpies in our area and a lot of robins!Your pictures are amazing!!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely and warm weekend!
Dimi..
I've read that magpies live within all Europe, now I've known they live in Greece as well! Thank you, Dimi!
DeleteOut there in the wild, its survival of the fittest. The magpies have to fend for themselves to survive since humans have a tendency to be more partial and protective towards smaller critters.
ReplyDeleteOh, so my guests magpies eat in the feeder before the small birds. They can survive! Thank you, Stiletto!
DeleteThe magpies are beautiful birds, if greedy! Cute poem too. :)
ReplyDeleteThey are enough pretty wearing in black and white. Thank you, Sweetbay!
DeleteI get jackdaws and wood pigeons on the feeders. All the birds are hungry in winter and if they let the small birds feed as well I don’t chase them away. I buy large sacks of bird food, it is costing me a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteah well, I like to watch them, so I get enjoyment back for my money.
It was the entertainment when I took these photos! I didn't want to drive out them. When I saw there was nothing in the feeder I've put some more food before I was leaving the summer house. Thank you, Frico!
DeleteOh such pretty images. It's lovely to see the birds in their winter finery.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hilary!
DeleteWe don't have magpies here, but they are handsome birds. We do have birds like grackles and starlings who are gluttons and take seed meant for others. I like the yellow and black bird on top, that is a species we do not have here either, I think. Who is he?
ReplyDeleteJason, this is titmouse, here it has yellow breast with black 'tie', white cheeks and black or blue head. Thank you!
DeleteI really like your pictures. We have many birds coming to our bird feeders, such as cardinals, Baltimore oriole, tufted titmouse, thrasher, mockingbird, etc., but I have not seen any magpie – they look pretty.
ReplyDeleteAll the birds you named don't live here, too cold for them, I guess. But there are a lot of pretty magpies! Thank you Vagabonde!
DeleteThe magpie is quite striking in its markings.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the little yellow bird?
Beautiful photos, love watching them.
Barb, this little bird is a 'big titmouse', it lives here all the year round, doesn't migrate in cold time. I've specially put the food for these birds in my feeder. Thank you!
DeleteCute poem and the birds are all very pretty. I'm glad you're getting some garden activity since the snow is covering all your pretty plants. Take care and stay warm.
ReplyDeleteYes, only some activities, as shoveling snow, cleaning paths, taking photos. Thank you, Grace!
DeleteVery interesting to see your magpies. They are smaller than the Australian magpie. Your photos are very good.
ReplyDeleteHope you are well and keeping warm.
Betty
Betty, I've found in You tube the video if singing Australian magpie! Yes, it's bigger and sings another song, ours ones only cry noisily. Thank you!
