GBBD In October

October came, it's the last month of autumn. Two years ago the first snow fell on October 2. This autumn is warm but the sun is already low. Today I've come late to the garden and when I began taking pictures I've realized that the shadows were long and the plants were poorly lighten. But nevertheless...
I will show what is in bloom and ripen in my garden.

The asters and sedum, they are actually autumn flowers. The Goldenrod (Solidago) looks amazing when its yellow flowers have faded.

The hydrangea 'Lime light', finally blooms in October, but I think it does not have time to blush until frost. The Grootendorst roses are not afraid of the cold and can keep blooming even under light snow. I like these roses, they are easy to care for and not capricious.

Small violets grow even in October, they appreciate every minute of sunlight but prefer to grow near the rocks those are heated at the afternoon. My clematis 'Rouge Cardinal' began to grow and bloom in June and so on without stopping till snow. It's very unassuming and grateful for the care and feeding. My Japanese maple is not going to drop its red leaves yet.

In October a lot of fruits and berries ripen in the garden, all the birds that do not fly away in warm areas and stay to winter here will eat these berries and fruits. This Kalinka (Viburnum) is ripe, I've eaten some berries: they no longer have bitterness. Chokeberry (Aronia) is very sweet and juicy, I picked a little for pie with apples. Lots of orange fruit are on the Celastrus vine, they have seeds inside. I do not know why, but the birds do not eat these fruits.

I have a lot of work in the garden until the end of October. But I hope that November will be warm without snow. It is necessary to cover the roses, clematis, hydrangeas, carnations, phlox, mint and lemon balm, to gather maple leaves. I have to tie up the branches of young black currant bushes and rhododendrons to heavy snow broke them. Before ice cover the pond I need to put the Nymphaeas in depth. I have long list 'to do' for October.
I cooked pie with apples and chokeberry, picked in my garden, it warmed me in cold day!

  5. You still have lots of flowers in your garden Nadezda, despite the shorter days and cold. October is always a busy month in the garden, I also started already to move agapanthus and oleanders to the greenhouse, it is very wet at the moment. The roses need to be tied up, dahlia tubers lifted and stored in the basement and so on. It keeps us busy and healthy I hope, but by November we are prepared for winter and can enjoy the warmth of our houses. Your pie is mouthwatering!

  8. Your October garden looks lovely, so many flowers still, and the berries are really decorative in the sunshine. I hope you get a long, nice autumn and that the frost is many weeks away. Here in London we can get first frost any time from November till February, and sometimes not at all – and the snow we get rarely lies for more than a few days. Loved your photos as always, and the pie looks scrummy :-)

    1. Helene, unfortunately the weather is unpredictable, we'll have snow in November but I'd like the frost starts lately. On the other hand, the plants suffer very much if there is frost without snow, that warm their roots and branches. I hurry to do all I need before winter come. Thank you!

  9. Your autumn garden looks gorgeous! Looking at your asters, I noticed I have none of them now. Aster is representative flower of autumn, so I have to get one! I've never known that there is a hydrangea which blooms in autumn! Your pie looks yummy!! You're not only a good gardener but a cooker:)

  12. Hi Nadezda! Your garden has so many bloom and colour still, must be wonderful to go for a stroll in it and enjoy the sun, even if it's low on the sky already and days are getting shorter and shorter. I haven't seen much sun lately, we've had sooooo much rain, the garden is already drenched again, not to take a walk in without wellies on and when it comes to bloom, well, there isn't any really and because of the hydrangeas not bloooming much last summer, those don't bring colour into the garden either. I really hope next year will be a better one for bloom.I did plant some bulbs though, hopefully they'll come out and give us a lot of colour when spring arrives.

    1. Marian, chokeberries are black, sour-sweet, on the next to last photo of berries. It's pity the weather was bad in your place, I remember you wrote about rain...rain in spring and summer. I hope the next year is warm and without much rain. Thank you!

  17. You do have a long to-do list getting ready for winter's arrival! Interesting that your clematis will bloom from June to snow. I don't know if it's me, my garden, or this area, but my clematis do not bloom well. Still, I keep trying. They're such beautiful flowers!

    1. This clematis 'Rouge Cardinal' is an old plant and suffered off my efforts to replant it, so it blooms well when I leave it in peace.Thank you, Holley!

  18. I just love your garden Nadezda, the blooms and berries are gorgeous. We've had quite a mild Autumn here in Essex, UK but things ate going to change soon, so the weather people are saying on the tv. We generally don't have too much snow here either but again it varies over the country.

    1. I think winter in Essex is milder than here in North. Many plants winter there in ground while I have to store them in cool place all winter. Thank you, Patricia!

  21. So many lovely blooms still gracing your garden, Nadezda. I was thinking of cutting back some of the goldenrod so it wouldn't re-seed so much, but I find it hard to--I agree those fluffy seedheads look good all through the winter. Looks like the birds will have a feast this winter!

    Replies
    1. The goldenrod doesn't re-seed much here, in cold climate, because not all seeds mature in summer. It's one of food for birds, I agree, Rose. Thank you!

  22. There is still plenty of colour in your garden.
I am getting bored with flowers now, I love leaves and the seed heads of hydrangeas and other big bushes, but I am getting ready to stop work.
Soon I will be gathering leaves for the leaf compost bin.

  25. So many lovely Autumn photos Nadezda. I like the bright colour of the sedum and the pale lime green of the hydrangea, but most of all I love the Clematis. I think it is my favourite flower. It's very difficult to choose one favourite flower, but I do love the different varieties of Clematis and yours is such a pretty cerise pink.
I think you will be very busy this month. So much more to do in a cold country where plants need to be protected from severe weather conditions.
We are starting to feel warmer days now and yesterday was the first day I needed to water the garden this Spring. Roses are in bud and I noticed the first bloom on my 'Queen Elizabeth' rose today.
    Best wishes, Betty

      Thank you!
