GBBD in December 2013

Happy Garden Bloggers Bloom Day to all!
This day Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) pleased me by its bright red colorful leaves, truly Christmas color! I'm a little late, was waiting for full Poinsettia bloom. It is set on the small table near my fireplace, it has red and green leaves and its small yellow flowers are in the center of the red leaves.
This winter is such unpredictable as last autumn was. In my previous post I wrote that snow is everywhere. The week passed and all snow has almost melted. The evergreens in my garden appeared through the melted snow and they look good between old grey grass. I love these dwarf round thujas, I never prune them and I love their shape.

It was strong windy weather I was worrying about the decoration that I've put on my garden spruce. When I'd come I saw all they are safe on the branches. The bonsai pines are well too, they were covered with snow last week and now are opened. The small evergreen mahonia feels well it's very hardy and in spring its leaves appear through the snow.

I have a small vegetable garden on my kitchen windowsill. I wish I have some fresh salad leaves, green onion and garlic leaves with Christmas meal.

Did you have Poinsettia? Did you store  or throw it away after blooming?
Do you grow any greenery indoors?

Have a nice week, bye!

  2. It just isn't Christmas without a poinsettia! I just bought a small one yesterday; I've tried to overwinter them a few times with no luck, so now I just throw them on the compost after the holidays. Your evergreen looks so festive with its Christmas decorations. Happy Bloom Day and a very Merry Christmas to you, Nadezda!

  3. Your poinsettia is beautiful as are your outdoor decorations. Evergreens are looking very nice now that the snow has melted. Of course, they also look pretty with snow on them.

  4. I have had poinsettias and once did manage to get one to 'flower' again but it was a lot of fuss to do so. We have ones with pink and with cream bracts for sale too but the red ones are the ones that look most festive.

  5. Yes I had several times poinsettias, after blooming they grow rather big in summer but until now I never got new flowers in the plants again. Your small vegetable garden on the window sill looks lovely and such fun to be able to have some fresh veggies of your own in winter.

  7. I love poinsettias, especially the red ones, and I usually have at least one. I have tried keeping a poinsettia but it grew very tall and leggy so I gave up, I understand it requires a lot of work to get it to re-bloom so hardly worth the work. I have some tall green plants indoors and every windowsill is filled with orchids – if I had more windows I would have more plants :) Happy GBBD!

  8. Hi Nadezda
I have a large poinsettia that was a gift. When it starts to dry up and lose its leaves, I will throw it away. I never keep them. You have a lot more patience than me! Merry Christmas.

  9. We have Poinsettia too but it usually dies off. My mother had one last year and she still has it in its pot! I like the fact that you put decorations on your outdoor trees. We used to do that when we had a garden. It takes Christmas outside as well as inside!

  25. I am interested how you can grow green vegetables near your window. I would like to try that in the winter, but I think the ducted floor heating would be too warm. Do you have heating in the room where they grow? They look very healthy.
I think that the poinsettia can be a bit tricky, but my daughter left her Christmas pot on the window ledge for a long time and only watered it occasionally and it grew new red leaves! She almost ignored it! It was very spindly.
