The Last Leaf

Fall is outside the window. Here in North it's cold and dark time of the year, but as wise people say: Nature has no bad weather'.
I've dug out Internet and found poems. Here are the poems that I liked and I added my pictures of autumn.

The Last Leaf
by Harry Behn

A few leaves stay for a while on the trees
After their color begins to turn,
And no other leaves seem as gold as these
Not even the ones our bonfires burn
With golden flames in piles on the ground.
A few leaves stay so long that I found

The one last leaf on a tree in the snow,
And when a galloping wind came round
The edge of our house and started to blow
Snow dust to sparkles floating free.
When the wind ran away, almost with me,

And sunshine settled quiet and cold.
There, like a bird, still on the tree
Was that lonesome leaf, no longer gold
But curly and brown and dry and old.

Autumn
By Judith Viorst

One by one the petals drop
There's nothing that can make them stop.
You cannot beg a rose to stay.
Why does it have to be that way?

November
by John Updike

The stripped and shapely
Maple grieves
The ghosts of her
Departed leaves.

The ground is hard,
As hard as stone.
The year is old,
The birds are flown.

And yet the world,
In its distress,
Displays a certain
Loveliness---

What do you think and feel in fall season? Would you see the loveliness of these cold days?
Thank you!

  3. Ha Nadezda, what do you think I feel in fall season? I suppose after almost three years of blogging my followers can guess I'm a follower of the seasons. I love them all, especially because of the different types of weather they show. I love the beauty of cold days, of gloomy days, of mellow and hot days.
By the way I am fond of poems, they are lovely especially accompanied by your great pictures.

  5. Nadezda, thank you for leaving a comment on my 'Bridgemere' blog. The leaves are falling quite thickly here as well. I had to scrape ice off my car windscreen on Sunday. But today the sun's been out and it's been unusually mild. I potted the last of my geraniums up this afternoon and have wrapped them in newspaper and put them under the shelves in my poly tunnel. Also planted the remainder of my spring bulbs in a sandstone trough near my back door. Your pictures are lovely.

    1. I see you had much work today Molly! It's good that you grow bulbs in sandstone trough all winter. I can't do this - in frosty days all bulbs will be frozen. Thank you!

    1. Donna, this is a wood liana that I have 2 varieties, one always has berries and another has nothing. It's Celastrus or bittersweet, here is about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celastrus
      Thank you!

  13. Bonitos versos!! Me gusta el otoño, me encanta salir a buscar sus colores. Octubre fue un mes raro de calor, y de golpe ha entrado el invierno con nieve en la sierra.
    Bonitas fotos Nadezda.
    Buena noches ;))
    Un beso.

  14. Oh, you still have some leaves on trees! Lucky you! :-)
Strong autumn winds have ripped off all from our trees and everything is bare.
Last weeks have been really dark and cloudy. I think these are the darkest days in a year. It feels like days are not arriving at all.
Part of me waits the snow, to make it all lighter and cheerier, but I'm little afraid of deep frosts though.

    1. I agree Tistou, the snow makes the days lighter but I do think the frost is more dangerous for many plants. Yesterday we had strong wind as well and the rest of leaves had flown. I wait for soft winter without strong frosty days, as you.
      Thank you!

  16. Beautiful as always, dear Nadezda! I love your pictures, especially those of the waxwings, a favorite bird of mine. You chose very nice poems to accompany your images. Fall is a beautiful season but I'm always a little sad to see the end of the gardening season.

  17. Lovely photos Nadezda, accompanied with some beautiful words. I enjoy every season as they have all good things to offer. In the autumn I especially enjoy the crisp light and the sense of everything slowing down for a bit – I can finally keep up with my garden! But as you know, in my garden there is a gardening day every day of the year, even in darkest winter, it never stops. I hope the snow is staying away for a while so you can still enjoy your garden too :-)

    1. Oh, yes Helene! Every day is a gardening day, you have many plants that need your care. I was surprised to know you sawed your old dry tree, because sure it was very hard work even if it's easy on TV :))
      Have a nice week!
