GBBD Mid-October

The weather indulges us in October, no snow and much rains, and hardy garden plants continue growing and blossoming.
Amazing Tagetes are about 60-70 cm high and branchy like bushes. Their inflorescence are large and bright.

Another amazing plant of this season is Impatiens 'Camellia Flovered'. I had sown it very late, in June, but Impatiens had grown rapidly and bloomed at the end of September. Now in the middle of October 'Camellia Flovered' blooms pretty red flowers.

Not only annual dahlias are in full flower the New England asters please me near the garden gates. I forget them all the seasons till October when asters are in bloom.

Annuals dahlias continue blooming for second month, there are a lot of buds and flowers on them. I gather faded buds so I'd had seeds for the next year. And I also want to try to keep the annual dahlia tubers for overwinter. Do you have any experience with annual dahlia tubers?

Only 2 roses are in flower in spite of cool nights of + 5 C. The rose 'Red carpet' bred in Finland, is very unpretentious and hardy. Another rose 'Golden showers' blooms like mad, nonstop, new buds replace faded ones. Perhaps I should cut its flowers and put in a vase in the city.

As always Parthenocissus quinquefolia or Virginia creeper reddens in the beginning of October, as if saying: 'Autumn has come, it is time to prepare for winter'. Dark smaller berries hang from the pergola and remind me warm days in Italy and grapes hanging over my head.

Although the grass is still green and it should be mowed at least one time per week but the nature changes: thick, dark and heavy clouds often appear. Perhaps the light white clouds flew away to the south, with flocks of geese, swans and ducks :).
The other day I was sitting on the porch with a camera in my hand to take photos of flocks fly away and drew attention to the shape of the dark cloud. The cloud settled low and the sun was already low. The sun's rays passing along the bright edge illuminated the cloud and went skyward.

Pond was quiet, water lilies already faded and only their leaves are still floating. Blue sky and white clouds reflected in the pond water.

Happy Garden Blog Bloom Day, fellows gardeners!

    1. There are some last blooming too, Anne. Next weekend I'll pull water lilies up, cut their leaves and drop them down to the pond bottom.

  3. You still have plenty of lovely blooms in your garden. I would if any of the Bwick swans that come here for winter will have three flown over your head.

  4. Beautiful post! I like the sunny colours of all the flowers, knowing soon it will be over. Dahlias I leave them in the ground, but I have heartly any winter frost. Maybe you can pot them up and overwinter in a frostfree space. It will be a chalange for you I guess! Groetjes Hetty

  11. I lost my dahlia flowers to the first frost we had last mid-week. Now they are lifted and drying under the shed until storing in cellar. Yours are still beautiful as the whole of your garden!

    1. It's pity your dahlias were killed in frost, Tistou. I think when we have first frost I'll lost mine too. I store dahlia tubers as well but no always successfully.

  12. So many lovely blooms! We are having similar mild weather here, keeping the flowers going much longer than usual. Your sky photos are beautiful. You asked me about a shrub I grew called Beautyberry--it's Callicarpa americana, a shrub that is native to parts of the U.S. Enjoy your lovely autumn!

    1. Thanks Rose for sending me the name of this unknown to me plant, unfortunately it doesn't grow in such northern areas as I live. I've read it is disease free and can be planted in any soil.

  17. Really amazing this sunshine going back to sky - that's why we have so less of it by now. ;)
I've been keeping dahlia tubers over-winter for very many years already. I take them up right after first frost, cut stems and position in plastic fruitbox (as they use in markets for strawberries), but good trick is to position them upside-down, so any liquid-lefts in stems don't go into tubers. Our basement is without any heating and not wet and it's best place to keep them. Really good for dahlias is if you on next spring separate tubers (they multiple like potatoes) and plant them one by one, but I have not whole field for them, so I either put too many of them in one hole (less blooming!) or try to give some away. But nobody want - they are too lazy for taking them up, they say. Well, sometimes then I give these for them any way saying you plant them like one-summer plants, ha-ha.

    1. Thanks for your advice, Köögikata, i have not basement but I'll be able to store them in cool corridor. It's very valuable experience. You're right many gardeners grow dahlias as annual plants - it's easier.
