The Garden In April

Well, spring is here, I'm glad. There was a lot of snow in the garden, it finally melted. The soil in beds becomes warmer. There are more and more sunny days.

As soon as the snow melted, I took a rake and began to collect the leaves left in autumn. In addition to the leaves, there are many dry branches that have fallen from the birch during winter. Of course, such a snowy winter brought trouble in the garden.

Round golden thujas suffered - their central branches broke and withered, and the branches along the edges of the plant strongly stick up. I will have to clean the center and cut the side branches of the 'golden globe' thuja.

The soil dries out from a large amount of water after the snow melts. Mole tracks are often visible. We will have to restore the lawn and in some places re-sow grass seeds.

I moved all the plants that wintered in the city to the greenhouse. I must say that it was difficult, But the plants arrived alive and well, except for a few broken branches.

Now they are transplanted into flowerpots and tubs and remain in greenhouse until warm weather. I planted small begonias and petunias in hanging flowerpots.

Hope they will decorate the garden and grow until autumn.

How nice that nature comes to life here after winter. Leaves appear on the trees and their fragrance is carried in the air.
What is the weather like in your area? What are your jobs now?

  1. I am sure that you flowers will bring you a lot of joy during the summer, Nadezda.
The little snow we got last winter have melted, but now it's very dry in the ground. The weather is chilly, but the spring is coming.
Your small begonias are very cute. I will plant them here too. I like begonias very much. I have been working a lot in my greenhouse lately. I have sown a lot of plants, and very soon they will need bigger pots.

  2. It has been a hard winter in your garden, I understand, but soon you will forget and enjoy your lovely flowers.
The weather here in my garden is ok with no frost, but the soil is very, very dry. I never saw anything like that in april. We only had 20 mm of rain since February so I have to water.
Keep safe and enjoy spring. Lisbeth

  4. Hello there Nadezda ! I'm sorry about the Thuga .. it is disheartening, but with your care I know it will improve !
I love your description of how the flowers and plants will decorate the garden .. such a simple word means such a lot when you think of it .. decorating our gardens is a part of what we do, but sometimes we are so busy with garden "chores" we forget that pretty outcome of our work. Spring has been so late here it has been discouraging .. I have been late blogging ... I have so much to do it seems overwhelming .. but I decide on each day what I can accomplish and try to follow through.
I hope you have lots of sunshine and warmer weather to enjoy your garden ! Take Care !

    1. Good to hear from you, Joy. I always think about the "decoration" in the garden. This is what the eyes catch when looking at it. Spring is also late here, there are still no leaves. The sun is shining, but it does not warm.

  13. You are going to spend some great times in your garden this season as you have lovely plants. Here the weather has been erratic, cold and warm but now it is getting warmer – up to 90 F (32.2 C) on Wednesday. I had a another magnolia tree planted in Nashville but until I am finished clearing out the house in Atlanta I can’t have plants because there are no one to water them when I am away. There is an old rose bush on the side of the house and it gave me a very pretty rose last week. Enjoy your garden, nature is good for us.
