Grefsheim Spirea

Grefsheim Spirea (Spiraea x cinerea 'Grefsheim') is an ornamental shrub and one of the loveliest early flowering Spireas. Grefsheim Spirea is a show-stopper when it bursts into bloom each spring.  It's a stunning display of white flowers in my garden.

Grefsheim bears small tiny white flowers against a mass of grey-green leaves on arching branches. When summer comes, the blue-tinted hue of the narrow, green leaves takes over, Grefsheim Spirea is in a full, compact appearance.

Spirea are deciduous shrubs and are very easy to grow. Grefsheim Spirea is a dense, rounded vase-shape shrub with arching branches. It will grow 1.5m (4-5') in height, spread 1.5m (4-5').

Grefsheim is tolerant of a variety of soil types and prefers full sun.  Butterflies and other pollinators love it, a shrub does well for a wildlife garden or sunny border. It’s fast-growing, very hardy and requires minimal care.
I planted 3 Grefsheims in my front garden along the fence and when my guests and neighbors come in they pause looking at in its spring show.

Have ever seen these spiraeas? Maybe you grow it in your garden as I do? What is your experience in growth?

  3. Yes, I have this one in my garden. After flowering I cut the shrub in a sphere of about 1.50m diameter. I Like that shape and by doing so the shrub is not to messy. Some years I cut back harder, to keep it a little smaller. So you can do whatever you wat! Groetjes,

    1. I love this idea, Hetty. I think I would cut my spirea in a sphere, because its branches are too long. Thank you!

  8. Hello Nadezda,
we have some Spiraeas, planted a long time ago. Unfortunately I don't know their names, but probably they are not these because yours look so much better and have much more flowers. :)
They are not my very best favourites though... I don't like the scent of the flowers very much. Do these smell nice?
But one thing is sure, the hares love them, especially in winter. :)
    Have a great weekend! xx

    2. Sara, I have other spireas except this one as well. They blossom in the middle of summer, have no scent and their flowers are reddish. I prune them very low to not have flowers at all.
Grefsheim spirea has to be pruned only after fading.

  10. We have been growing Spiraea 'Grefsheim` for many years in the yard. I did not handle them in any way. Between them cut the bushes off. Next summer they are big again. Beautiful white flowers ;-)) Greetings

  12. We don't have any spireas now but we did used to have one that had pretty pink and white flowers. The flowers were two colours on the same cluster. It was very pretty.

    1. I haven't known that the rose season is so short in Japan, Keity. It's pity! My roses are just growing leaves, no buds yet. Their season is July-September here, sometimes until frost.
      Have a nice Sunday!

  24. Grefsheim Spirea is a beautiful looking plant Nadezda. It looks similar to the form Arguta which we have grown for many years.
