Book Review: "Vertical Gardening"

Five years ago I was given a book to my birthday, it was "Vertical Gardening" by Lydia Uleysky.  The years passed  I often read this book, because the author tells and shows interesting ideas, sharing her experience in garden  landscape.
The author Lydia writes on creepers she sorts through all their varieties and gives ideas of the most common of them. Indeed, creepers are indispensable in vertical gardening; they help to increase green areas especially in small gardens.
For inexperienced gardeners Lydia advises to start with ordinary bindweed, decorative beans or Parthenocissus. She talks that people in southern  Russia often decorated verandas, high walls of houses with colorful clematis, wisteria, climbing roses, Amur grape.
Of course, I now rely on my gardening experience in the past 5 years. Some plants such as wisteria or Amur grapes will not grow in my climate. I'm acquainted with a variety and features of climbing plants I could explore in my garden for example Caprifole honeysuckle that might hang upside down and to decorate the walls of my summer cottage.

Here are projects of trellises and gazebo
The author Lydia tells about wooden and iron grids, pyramids, romantic arches, trellises, they might be decorated with clematis, parthenotsissy, ipomoea as well. I have arches and trellises in my garden too, they divide garden into different areas. So I could select a cozy area near my pond and close the compost boxes with nice green plants.
The book also tells about tools to combat the invasion of pests, about the methods of reproduction, watering and fertilizing of favorite plants in containers and tubes.
My birthday gift today is a book (I hope) 'The easy care garden expert', one of the series by Dr. D.G. Hessayon. I'll see it at the evening, when my family congratulate me, later I will show you.

Do you have a book you've read many times? What are you interested in gardening books?

  2. I think climbers and arches are indispensable in gardens especially small ones. To be honest I can’t remember when I last actually tread a gardening book.

    1. I think Sue you get information you need on Internet, don't you? But the book has its unique charm when you take it from the shelf.

  3. Happy Birthday Nadezda. I love garden books about as much as gardens. I am like Marit I have many garden books, some I read over and over. Maybe not every word but parts of certain books I read again and again. I have one book I really like by Mirabel Osler 'A Gentle Plea for Chaos'. I have read that cover to cover several times.

  6. Best wishes on your birthday, Nadezda. Hope you have had a happy celebration with your family.
Garden books are always a most appreciated gift. For my special birthday recently, my son gave me a very big and heavy book "Botanica". I first thought I would not use it very much as it is so easy to search on the Internet, but I have already used it several times to look up particular plants. It is a wonderful publication and I love browsing through it's pages.

  9. A day too late, but still congratulations with your birthday Nadezda.
As you may know already I love books on gardening. With all those small, gardens vertical gardening is a must I think and I like it too on ugly buildings. A new book gives us always new ideas whatever the subject is.
    Regards, Janneke

  10. Hello, dear Nadezda! Happy Birthday! All the hugs and kisses!!! :)
I just love gardening books. It seems that all my money goes on plants in summers and on gardening books in winter! Ha-ha! I cherish books about different plants and little less about gardening design etc. I have three different books on snowdrops for instance! :D

I know you have pretty nice collection of snowdrops, your garden is full of flowers. I'd love to have all books by Dr. D.G. Hessayon, especially his plant classification.

  11. Belated happy birthday, Nadezda!!!
The book looks very interesting. I would hope to have more climbers and creepers in my "garden". The climate makes it a little bit difficult.
I too love gardening books and read very often especially the reference works, about different types of plants, their hardiness zone, colour of flowers, soil etc.
    Happy garden dreaming! :)
