April

The beginning of the month was snowy. The paths in the garden were covered with snow, as if they had not been cleared all winter. The temperature during the day does not rise above +3 C, and at night it is minus.

The ice on the Neva and large lakes, in the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea began to melt. Vessels pass along the bay in St. Petersburg. Ice floes break off and float into the sea. This upsets ice fishing enthusiasts, because they can swim away on an ice floe.

Rescue hovercraft are constantly on duty in St. Petersburg, they remove the unfortunate fishermen from the torn off ice floes and take them to the shore. In early April, the fishermen were rescued along with the dog and their equipment, they sailed on an ice floe into the Gulf of Finland and into the sea. I don't understand how adults can be so reckless about their lives?

April 16 was Orthodox Easter. TV showed the night service in the church. Many people make or buy "Kulich" at the supermarkets. This is such a sweet cupcake with raisins and marzipan. People also paint eggs in different colors, it is an art to decorate them with beautiful patterns. I sometimes dye eggs, put them in water with onion peel and boil for 10-15 minutes so that they turn darker.

Very little can be photographed in the garden, while the snow lies on the flower beds and on the lawn. In the sun, where the earth warmed up, crocuses and white flowers (Leucojum vernum)  appeared. These simple early flowers surprise every spring. They are very hardy and bright.

Surprisingly, peonies were also frost-resistant. Their pink-red stems appeared on thawed patches in the snow. I removed the shelter from the peonies, let them bask in the sun.

Buds of future flowers increase on rhododendrons. They also overwintered well. Roses that wintered in the greenhouse began to grow. The first leaves appeared on the trunks. Probably soon they will begin to grow and bloom.

What made you happy in April?

  1. Nice signs of spring at your place too, Nadezda. I think we have very similar climate. Yesterday I found the first snowdrops in my garden, and it made me very happy. This winter have been very long and cold here, and still I have a lot of snow in my garden.

  2. In my town was snowing maybe a week ago, now is sunny or rainy...weather is changing so often.
Your garden will bloom very very soon. :) I love to observe Mother Nature. I planted frist flowers, saw first butterflies, ladybugs and more. :) That makes me happy. Ooo and reading on balcony....but it is tricky beacuse I want to stay there too long and do not do what I have to. ;D
Have a really good month, healthy, full of love, full of lovely moments. <3

    1. I imagine you sitting on the balcony and reading a book, Agnieszka. I also saw the first butterfly and the first bumblebee. These insects feel the approach of spring. All the best.

  3. Ice fishermen court death every year and some do indeed pay the price for recklessness. Is a fish dinner really worth it?

    1. No, it's not David. But there are men who do not think about the value of life.

  4. Herkullisen näköinen kakku ja kauniita kevään merkkejä.
Krookusten kukinta, auringonpaiste ja lintujen keväinen liverrys tekevät minut onnelliseksi.

    1. Sue, I have never walked on an ice floe, I think it is dangerous because of the strong flow of river water.

  9. Hi Nadezda,
Ice fishing seems very dangerous to me.
Slowly spring begins to show its beauty, making all nature reborn.
Around here (Lisbon) April has been a very hot month, which is unusual for this time of year.
    All the best for you

  14. I don’t hear about fishermen falling under the ice around here, maybe up north in states like Wisconsin or Minnesota where it is cold, and Canada, of course. Here it is always too warm to have lakes to freeze. We had a bad frost before Christmas but it lasted about 2 days. Last week in the North Georgia Mountains it was 80 F – 26.6 C, can you believe it? Weather is so erratic now. You are such a great gardener, Nadezda, your flowers are always lovely (when they come out!)

  15. Hola Nadezda. Esa pesca parece realmente peligrosa. Tu jardín ya se ve hermoso con el regreso de las flores y los brotes. Aquí en Asturias también hay un día en que se celebra una fiesta que se llama los huevos pintos y en la que se muestran huevos pintados. Besos
